Mario is 4 years old. Today he was rushed to the hospital in Solola when a pot of boiling water was pushed onto him.

Mario's father left him and his 4 siblings and went to live with another woman. His mother also left him and his siblings and went to live with another man.
Mario and his two other young brothers are being raised by an aunt.  The two older children are adults now and have moved on with their lives.

Mario's aunt has to work to be able to feed the children. She has a 16 year old girl looking after the children while she is at work. There was a big pot of boiling water on the fire......Mario and his brothers were playing inside...and there was an accident, one of them shoved Mario and the pot fell on top of him burning him severely.

He is now in Solola hospital and the aunt needs medication to be able to help him.
She does not have the money to purchase these medicines.  Also now she has to stay at the hospital caring for Mario and she cannot work to feed the family.

If you would like to  help Mario get the medication he needs and also his aunt have money to feed the other children, please send a donation to www.mayanfamilies.org ...and note on it ...MARIO. ...thank you so much!

Alba is 17 years old. She comes from a very poor family who do not have the resources to help her with medical care.
She is one of 10 children. They lost their home in the Tropical Storm Agatha and have lived in a tent and then in a house made of cane sticks since then.

Her father works in the fields and makes $3 US per day when he does find work. This is not enough to feed them all.
They do not have beds, they sleep on straw mats as you can see in the photo below.
Alba is suspected of having Leukemia and needs medical help. The hospital wants to send her to the city for exams but the transportation and exams have to be paid for. It is approx. $150 US for Alba to go to the city and get the exams she needs to find out what illness she has.
If you would like to help Alba, please send a donation to www.mayanfamilies.org and note that the payment is for Alba #1453 ....medical.
If you would like any further information , please do not hesitate to write to me, sharon@mayanfamilies.org http://ow.ly/i/4O9kg http://ow.ly/i/4O9kF http://ow.ly/i/4O9kJ

ANTHROPOLOGIST WORKS TO PRESERVE THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF SOLOLÁ
Here is an interesting article about an American anthropologist who is fluent in Kaqchiquel Maya and who has been working in Sololá for the past 17 years. He has recently completed a project of a social sciences text, written in Kaqchiquel Maya, the focus of which is the history, customary law and local government structure. He was also became involved when the cemetery was unearthed during the excavation for the new Sololá mercado. Read the article here:
