JJ, a 5-year old Labrador Retriever was an improvised explosive device detection dog and helped save the lives of soldiers in Afghanistan until his retirement in July 2014. He is 1 of 3 runners-up, highly commended by the Blue Cross pet charity for their Blue Cross Medal.

During his third tour of Afghanistan in September 2013, JJ fell down a 60 foot well whilst searching a compound. He sustained serious internal injuries and a fractured vertebra in his back.

After emergency treatment in the UK veterinary treatment facility in Camp Bastion, he was then flown back to the Defence Animal Centre in Melton Mowbray for further evaluation and rehabilitation.

He was finally declared fully fit to return to full-time work in April, 2014, just 9 months after he sustained potentially life-changing injuries.

Although it was clear to all that JJ revelled in being back at work, the decision was taken to discharge him from duty to allow him to enjoy a well deserved retirement with Corporal Phil Corlett, one of his former handlers. In the picture, JJ undergoing physiotherapy.

The First World War commemorative event in Folkestone, Kent, saw the arrival of His Royal Highness Prince Harry to dedicate the new 'Step Short' memorial arch.

The command to 'Step Short' was given - the command given to the troops as they marched down a steep hill to the quayside on the way to the battlefields 100 years ago. A normal march would not be possible.

Today, service personnel paraded down this route to the harbour.
