If your pay isn't stretching as far lately, you're not imagining things.

South Africa's inflation accelerated in July - the fastest pace in 10 months - on the cost of housing, utilities and transport.

Lower and middle-income South Africans are especially affected. The higher cost of transport, food and utilities mean there's little left for savings, debt servicing or discretionary spending.

Pay increases for workers in the private sector are likely to lag behind inflation. This is because more companies are increasingly awarding performance-related salary increases.

For trade unions negotiators, an inflation-linked annual increase is a big issue. We hope the LRS Inflation Monitor continues to be a valuable resource for strengthening your bargaining cases.
