"What’s missing, not just in the tech world but across the board, is a dedicated track—complete with titles, incremental pay raises and true upward potential—for exceptional performers who aren’t keen on managing people."
For most of us, climbing the corporate ladder means first becoming a manager. Then, as your control extends over bigger teams, and eventually entire departments, you ascend in an organization's hierarchy. Your career advancement therefore—in terms of title, pay and recognition—is inextricably ...

'As for what the show is about, that’s a more nebulous concept.

[Dylan Moran] said: “There is a theme but I don’t know what it is.

“It’s deliberately messy because I feel that life is quite messy right now. For everybody.

“Everybody feels like their attentions spans are being trashed every second of every day. It is partly about the sense of acceleration we are all experiencing.”

So modern technology and social media will doubtless be in the firing line?

“Yes. And also the new and ever expanding levels of horror in the news,” Dylan said. “Along with the equally insane levels of triviality in other non-news that we’re offered simultaneously.'

“The past is a distant, receding coastline, and we are all in the same boat. Along the stern rail there is a line of telescopes; each brings the shore into focus at a given distance. If the boat is becalmed, one of the telescopes will be in continual use; it will seem to tell the whole, the unchanging truth. But this is an illusion; and as the boat sets off again, we return to our normal activity: scurrying from one telescope to another, seeing the sharpness fade in one, waiting for the blur to clear in another. And when the blur does clear, we imagine that we have made it do so all by ourselves.”

No matter how you approach it, says Ton, start with a mentality: "All decisions should be good for employees, good for customers, and good for investors. It creates a virtuous cycle. And if you make these four choices, the business will improve over time."

MIT Professor Zeynep Ton says the relationship between wages, productivity, and profits is not as clear-cut as most of us think.

What a wonderful idea - the CNA Language School in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has figured out a way to teach English to its students without having to send them abroad: have them Skype with the elderly.
Here's to hoping more speaking exchange programs like this start springing up.
