As a #birthdoula, you know there is always a potential for deviations from the mom’s vision for her birth experience. These deviations are the result of medical impositions on her birth. Whether these impositions emerge prenatally, or during her birth, the mother will need her doula’s support to make an informed decision, or to make adjustments without compromising her whole vision. She will also need you to help her accept what became impossible for her. This means that you need a lot of knowledge about the type of care givers, medical tests & procedures and common complications that may appear during the birth. This online lesson is designed to give you a deeper understanding of these complications, and give you the best coaching tools to coach your client around this topic. Immersing in water is known to be a great tool for coping and progressing in #childbirth. When the body is immersed in water at a chest level, 75% of the body weight is dispersed. The buoyancy allows the #birthing mother to move and change positions freely while losing the impact of gravity. Between changing positions and improved muscle functioning, more room is created in the mother’s pelvis, thus increasing her pelvic diameter. This allows the baby’s head to rotate with ease as it is not restricted by gravity. Water buoyancy can reduce cervical pressure. Heat, especially in the form of a tub of warm water, has always been an important way to reduce pain and discomfort. Less discomfort leads to a greater relaxation, decrease anxiety levels and allows the mother to cope better, and even enjoy her #labor.

A #doula is a non-medical support figure in the field of birth support. Of course all doulas are familiar with common alterations, complications and medical interventions in #childbirth, but nevertheless, they can’t give any medical advice or perform any medical task. So how can you support your client when it comes to medical aspects of their birth? You can use the BRAIN model and describe the medical procedures in terms of Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition and what if the mother choose to wait on it and do Nothing for now.
When you use BRAIN, do you think that the Benefits or Risks are medical? No, they can’t be because you are not a medically trained professional. These can only be the benefits or risks, or even alternatives, from the perspective of the quality of the mom’s birth experience. If you are not sure how to do it; how to coach your clients around medical aspects of their birth without invading the medical territory, I would love to teach you how.

This is a big part of the ‘Art of Coaching for Childbirth’ workshop. http://www.birthcoachdoulatraining.com/dona-approved-workshop/

There is a misconception that #doulas only provide care for those interested in natural and unmediated #birth. Let’s clarify this once and for all: doulas provide care for ALL #birthing moms, regardless of their choices or vision for their birth; unaccompanied teen mothers, women who have little or no social support, women who have disabilities, women who plan a #cesarean sections, women who have unplanned caesarean sections or women who are planning a TOLAC (trial of labor after cesarean) or a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). At the core of doulas’ role definition, there is a commitment to make this the very best birth experience for a woman. Hire a birth doula!

When supporting and leading a mother in #labor as her #birthdoula, you want to provide the best care and empowerment for the couple involved. But how are you going to do it without establishing a deep connection and understanding of each couple? How will you provide culturally appropriate, emotional support to the birthing mother, helping her cope in her way? How do you set aside any preconceived notion you might have and support the mother in alignment with her belief system, her strengths, and her motivation? And how will you lead her to the birth experience she envisions for herself?
As a doula, you will also need to support the father and whoever else may be present in the room. Help them participate in the #birthing experience at the level that they are comfortable with. Prenatal coaching sessions are necessary in order to establish this deep connection and understanding of the couple you support. Learn to conduct prenatal coaching sessions – now offered live or online. http://www.birthcoachdoulatraining.com/dona-approved-workshop/

From a coaching point of view, a doula needs to understand the difference between accountability and responsibility during the birthing process. Here, I share the experience I had with one of my clients: http://www.birthcoachdoulatraining.com/sample-post-accountability-vs-responsibility-childbirth/
