This month we will be discussing Go 1.6, as well as celebrating it's possible release in mid-February.

Go 1.6 is the 7th release of the language which has been open source since November 10th, 2009 -- that's 6.5 years since the project was open sourced and nearly 4 years since the 1.0 release. A lot has changed in the language since 1.0, so this is a great opportunity to discuss the improvements landing 1.6.

New features and notable changes in 1.6:

Native HTTP/2 support
Garbage Collector improvements
GOVENDOREXPERIMENT becomes the default
text/template changes. A long requested ability to trim whitespace in templates has arrived
cgo changes
More supported platforms.
And many more changes listed in the Release notes

Due to talk that the weather is expected to get bad today, we can do a couple of things about tonights meeting. Of course we have the option of waiting to see what actually happens, in case this is all hype. The downside to this our heat in the office has been flaky this week and we are not in the office today so there is no telling if there is heat or not either. We can also run this meeting via a Hangout on Air from the comfort and warmth of our own homes. If we go this route I'll post links to join the live hangout and the YouTube around 5 or 5:30. Please note if you join in on the hangout you will also be recorded, so if you are okay with that feel free to join me and participate. Otherwise you can watch us live via Hangouts or YouTube. We also have the option of waiting until next week to do it, the downside of that it may coincide with the week Code Journeymen will be moving offices so the location may not be set in stone next week that or the office may be in a state of chaos.

If you would prefer any of the above options regardless of the weather please let me know and we can make it happen.

It's the end of the year and that time of year that people start making plans/goals for the new year.  Does any of your plans include contributing to an open source project, have you thought about doing so at some point?  This months meeting will be on How and Why You Should Contribute to Open Source.

We will also be holding a potluck so feel free to bring in food or drinks to share.
