"A tiny pinhole in the fabric of existence—a sliver of light—is enough to illuminate everything. The resurrection is that glimpse into reality."

"We accumulate a lot of spiritual clutter in our hearts. People, things, and experiences stick to us spiritually, sipping emotional energy from our limited supply. Jesus wants to take you on a tour of your heart and show you all of the spiritual clutter. He wants to create a spiritual space there for God to fill with His grace. 'Blessedness' is spiritual space."

"If you want to know how to identify a fool, examine their behavior on social media. Potential employers do this all the time. The Bible has a lot to say on the subject, and as it turns out, social media is the perfect platform for a fool."

"Imagine me running around that field on a cold afternoon, lamb under one arm like a squirming football, dodging the ram and trying to catch the mother so that the little lamb could nurse. If your peace is about your ability to control your circumstances, then you have no peace."

"With each new allegation of sexual misconduct that breaks in the news, I am uncomfortably reminded of Jesus’ words: judge not, that you be not judged. But was Jesus really admonishing them to judge less, or was he rather asking them to judge well?"

"When you encounter hassle in your life, you know that it is something you would not have planned for yourself. Someone or something else is in control and is messing with your life. Hassle reminds us that this is all a farce—that we’re not in control. That was the first Christmas in a nutshell; it was life unfolding according to someone else’s plan."

A pilgrimage will filter the things that you carry in your life. How much baggage have you accumulated over the course of your life? How about grievances? Those are heavy. How about your resume? Or addictions? Pilgrims know something the rest of us don't--they know how to travel light.

"If you want to love your neighbor, you have to be willing to enter their story. You have to be genuinely interested in how they came to this point. Except for grace, you might be in their position. Ironically, it is probably simpler to be pro-life with regards to the unborn than pro-life towards your neighbor, because you must enter more fully your neighbor’s story, including their choices that you might dislike."

"People who follow God establish milestones of mercy in their lives. They tattoo truth about God onto their souls. They make monuments of those moments when God shows up to rescue them. Why? Because we all have a memory problem."
