Shared from Terrance Burton, Dean of Library Services, UMass Dartmouth:
Congratulations, Matt! Well deserved, the CARES award recipient for June.
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
Please join me in congratulating Matthew Sylvain, Associate Librarian in Library Services, as the June 2015 CARES recipient (Chancellor's Award Recognizing Excellence in Service). Matt was nominated by a faculty member for being a "tremendous asset to our faculty and students in many ways."
In his role, Matt coordinates eLearning and online support of the Library Systems and Digital Services department. According to his nomination, Matt goes above and beyond in assisting students with library resources. He responds quickly to their requests, and then takes extra steps-compiling a list of resources, organizing study guides, scheduling an orientation session for the entire class to learn about databases and resources, and tutoring one-on-one to ensure students can work independently with available tools. He accommodates the students by working with them in person, online or through email. According to another colleague, Matt's attention and care was also evident in the "above the expectations" work he did for the online training module for new Resident Assistants. His submission included a detailed and impressive video about the Library Learning Commons and other resources available to RAs and students. "That's part of Matt's way. He creates and nurtures contacts within other campus entities which enables him to help students in different and sometimes unexpected ways and, of course, he supports the ongoing work of his campus colleagues in those organizations as well."
Matt's service extends to the faculty and their research work as well. He often receives requests for "out of the ordinary" citations and references and works diligently to find them. Matt works closely with faculty in their development of library collections, instructions, and research needs. One colleague mentioned Matt's persistence in "calling around various agencies or organizations trying to track down data or a source needed for a researcher." He is described as being "exactly the kind of librarian we need to build a research, scholarship and innovation culture" as UMass Dartmouth strives to obtain Carnegie Doctoral Research University status.
I am so proud of Matt and look forward to learning of the next CARES recipient. I welcome nominations from staff, faculty and students and I encourage multiple nominations. If you know someone deserving of this recognition, please share with us by completing a nomination form. Please follow the link:

Relax you've found us.

Our Vision

Historically at the center of the university's intellectual process, the UMass Dartmouth Library is many things to many people. It is the librarian working with a student in the discovery and evaluation of search methods and knowledge resources. It is the physical building with its collections, its seating for group study and individual contemplation. It is a virtual space with resources that are accessible at anytime from anywhere. At its best the library is a sanctuary outside the classroom where one can freely locate and compare the newest printout of information with ideas from other times and places. To meet these expectations and other challenges we will continue to pursue our commitment to excellence, innovation and cooperation in the provision of library services.

There are two libraries at UMass Dartmouth. The Claire T. Carney Library serves as the main library for the university and is lead by Dean Terrance Burton ( The law library located within the UMass School of Law is lead by Director Spencer Clough (
