Serum thyroglobulin concentrations are used to monitor patients with differentiated ‪#‎thyroidcancer‬, but may be misleading in the presence of antithyroglobulin autoantibodies and heterophile antibodies. Mayo Medical Laboratories has developed an assay to address this issue by testing first for the presence of thyroglobulin antibodies by immunoassay and, in antibody-positive specimens. http://mayocl.in/1FKD1PH

There are several causes of ‪#‎kidneystones‬, ranging from diet to genetics. In Part 1 of this Hot Topic series, we examine the causes of stones and the need for stone analysis. Understanding the stone’s composition can support a diagnosis and help guide treatment plans and prevention options. http://mayocl.in/1blvRoc

A recent study by Mayo Clinic researchers published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology addresses the question of whether multiple lesions in lung cancer patients represent true metastasis versus independent primary lesions. Using next-generation DNA sequencing, researchers developed a test to differentiate multiple primary tumors from metastasis. http://mayocl.in/1P6ZaZ7

A team of Mayo Clinic researchers has succeeded in identifying the source of ‪#‎cancer‬ in patients’ gastrointestinal tracts by analyzing DNA markers from tumors. The results open the possibility that doctors could one day be able to screen for cancer anywhere in the body with a noninvasive blood test or stool sample. http://mayocl.in/1biaPXJ

Herceptin has been touted as a wonder drug for women with HER2-positive ‪#‎breastcancer‬, an aggressive form of the disease that is fueled by excess production of the HER2 protein. However, not all of these patients respond to the drug, and many who do respond eventually acquire resistance. A team of researchers led by Mayo Clinic has found a promising way to circumvent this obstacle. http://mayocl.in/1GF8zb5

Mechanical circulatory support is increasingly used for patients with end-stage heart failure, though complications such as bleeding and thrombosis are common. Protocols often call for monitoring and titration of antiplatelet agents in the perioperative period. In our latest Hot Topic, Dr. Brad Karon describes a study to identify the optimal platelet function tests for this purpose. http://mayocl.in/1b3nCOx
