After an exceptional career in the show ring, producer, international judge and IDHS(GB) President, ROBERT OLIVER was honoured by being presented with the Equestrian of the Year Award for 2018, in a moving ceremony at the 70th Anniversary of the Horse of the Year Show, in recognition of the fact that he has dedicated his whole life to the equestrian industry, where his opinion is sought after and respected.

It was fitting that life-long friend Jeff Osborne, Honorary Vice President of The Horse Of The Year Show, presented the magnificent Trophy, as these two have competed together at HOYS since 1970. An emotional Robert said he was both humbled and proud to receive this prestigious Award.

Since his first HOYS in 1970, where he won the Small Hunter of the Year, Robert has broken all the HOYS records, winning more than 38 HOYS Championships, from Working Hunters to Hacks and Riding Horses to Show Hunters and Cobs, one of the most famous being the Heavy Weight Cob, Super Ted, who won six Championships including the Supreme Horse of the Year title in 1990.
This was Robert’s 21st year of judging the SEIB Search for a Star Competition Finals at HOYS, from which he has now sadly retired. He said that the Search for a Star was probably one of the most important competitions for horses and ponies in the country and has been responsible for launching the showing career of many exceptional equines who have gone on to win major titles at HOYS

A lifelong supporter of the Irish Draught, Robert became our Vice President in 2001 and has been our President since 2011.

He has participated in many workshops, judges’ assessment days and inspirational talks over the years and, as this Award indicates, he is still one of the most respected experts in the equine world.

Robert and wife Claire still produce top class show horses from their home base in Gloucestershire and always have Pure and Part bred Irish Draughts in their yard.

In a thrilling Championship, it was the battle of the Irish Draughts, between HW winner, pure bred ID 6-year-old gelding, Silver Diamond, by Silver Jasper and LW winner, 10-year-old gelding, Bling Cobsby, by Come T.
The Championship went to the Heavyweight, owned and bred by Sue Tennant, ridden by Magnus Nicholson, with the LW in Reserve, bred by John Maginn, owned and ridden by Vicky Smith.
What a wonderful way to highlight the versatility of the Irish Draught with these two beautiful cobs in the limelight.
Congratulations to both owners and riders - flying the flag for the Irish Draught at this most prestigious of Shows

Magnus now has two horses in the Supreme Horse of the Year Championship which will be held tonight (Sunday).

**IDHS(GB) @ Hoys 2018 : Saturday (HW Cobs)**
Amazing result in the HW Cobs this morning.
Magnus Nicholson rode Sue Tennant’s 6 year old pure bred ID gelding, Silver Diamond, to victory in a very strong class.
This lovely Cob is by Silver Jasper, out of West Point Diamond and is full brother to Sue’s Class 1 (RID) stallion, Silver Wind Twister.
The Final is tonight, so fingers crossed.*

In the Lightweight section, there were just two with listed Irish Draught connections - third place Barnacurra Maximus Meridius owned by Amanda Gallagher, ridden by Ian Smeeth and 6th placed Ballarin My Lady, owned by Michael Jerram and ridden by Chris Hunnable.
Disappointingly, there were only 14 forward and the commentator reported that this was due to some owners/riders entering several but only bringing one, which is not against the rules, but certainly seems to be against the spirit of the competition.

In the Middleweights, there were, understandably, more part bred Draughts; In first place was Susan Grainger’s consistent chestnut, Treganick, ridden by a delighted Claire Oliver, closely followed by Bloomfield Valhalla, owned and ridden by Polly Coles.
In 3rd place was Justine Armstrong Small’s Crosstown Dancer gelding, Carlingfords King, ridden by the owner.
In fourth place was ISH It’s The Kings Speech, owned by Mr & Mrs Burley, ridden by Ian Smeeth and in fifth there was Abigail Shaw’s Mr Darcy Dancer (ISH) also by Crosstown Dancer, Ridden by Amy Cook.
In 8th place was Helen Baker’s Mossy (ISH) out of Carrickrock Star Lass, ridden by Trudy Deja.
In the Heavy Weights, as was expected, the Irish Draught influence really shone through, with some beautiful pure and part Bred Irish Draughts on parade. Of the 26 entries, a staggering 19 had Irish Draught blood!
In 3rd place was HM The Queen’s Tower Bridge, by Avanti Amorous Archie, Ridden by Chris Hunnable; fourth place went to Rosa Dancer, a son of Crosstown Dancer, owned by J Lockwood, ridden by Lucy Lockwood; Fifth place went to Henrietta Spencer’s Lord John; ridden by the owner, this is another Crosstown Dancer son and standing in sixth place was Orions Cruiser, also by Crosstown Dancer, owned and ridden by Rhys Harper.
In seventh place was Vision Impossible, by Classic Vision, owned by Claudine O’Connor, Ridden by Rory Gilsenan.
Remarkably, Lord John and Orion’s Cruiser are full brothers, bred by Maurice Casey out of his good mare Direen Iren- well done Maurice.

**HOYS - 2018**
On Wednesday morning, our own RORY GILSENAN won the huge working Hunter Class at HOYS, riding REBECCA Collins’ Atlantic Slim (Atlantic Sparket/ Atlantic Amanda).
Out of 40 entries, there were 27 Irish Sport Horses and 2 pure bred Irish Draughts; of the top nine, one was an Irish Draught and six were ISH.

On Thursday, Magnus Nicholson romped to victory in the 27 strong Small Show Hunter Class, on Ros Croft’s Bowland Dynamo, bred by Michael and Julie Cornthwaite.
There was one ID X and two ISH in the top nine.

Rory and Magnus will both be in the Horse of the Year Supreme Championship on Sunday.

***Mare inspections 2018***
There will be a mare inspection at New Hill Stud, Worsley, Manchester, on Tuesday 9 October 2018, by kind permission of Mr Mark Fitton. There are currently six mares due to come forward.

To help make this inspection viable, we are prepared to accept a small number of additional mares for grading. If you wish to apply, in view of the short timescale, your mare must already be registered or overstamped with the IDHS (GB), her passport must be in your name and you must be a current member of the Society. Mares must be two years old or over. There is no upper age limit.

Please send me your completed application form (download here) and fee before 27 September (the original closing date was 7 July). The details that you will need, including the protocol for the inspection process, are all in the guidance notes. These are also downloadable.

Six mares have already been inspected this year, three at Moreton Morrell in April and three at the Annual Breed Show in Grantham in August. Unfortunately, due to a lack of applicants elsewhere in the country, we can only run three inspection venues in 2018. Hopefully we will have more applicants next year.

The results from this year’s mare inspections will be posted after the October 9 inspection has been completed.

Inspection administration manager
