Populated mostly by the decedents of the Tamil migrants who invaded Sri Lanka some centuries ago, Northern Sri Lanka portrays a cultural mix both of Sri Lanka and South India. Offended by the 30 years old civil war the region is in the process of rewinding the clock that was set backwards. With marvelous improvements in the area it’s much to the traveler’s joy that the de-mining process is completed and also the security clearance is now available providing the ease of access.

Being more close to India than Colombo, Jaffna in the Northern tip is famed for the delicious Mangoes grow there. Organizing pilgrim tours to copter-flights to the cultural marvels dotted in the province is in itself a fresh experience even for most locals.

Jewels of Jaffna known in the hearts of Sri Lankans are Nallur Kandaswamy Hindu Temple, Nagadeepa Temple located in an island, Kadurugoda Temple, Jaffna Fort, Shree Nagapooshani Amman Hindu Temple, The Miracle Springs of Keerimalai, Bottomless Well of Nilavarai, Casuarina Beach, Fort Hammenhiel and a few more. The coastal line of North province was victimized by the Boxing Day Tsunami too.

Environment in here can be described as a range from semi-deserted to multiple expanses of water. The names of almost all the areas in the North are way different than elsewhere in Sri Lanka as they were named in Tamil. Those will give you a hard time pronouncing the names and a twist in the tongue too.
