Unknown Worlds is a small, independent game developer. We are a global company with a tiny team. We strive to create amazing games, and are the proud creators of the Spark Engine and Natural Selection 2, among other technologies and titles.
Our nerve centre is in San Francisco, CA, where nine of our ~18 strong team are located. We also employ awesome people in the UK, Austria, Australia, and across the United States.
Max McGuire (@max_mcguire) and Charlie Cleveland (@flayra) founded Unknown Worlds in 2006. Charlie had previously created the Half-Life mod Natural Selection, which was played by around 300,000 people. Charlie, Max, and Cory Strader are respectively the CEO/Game Director, Technical Director and Art Director of UWE.
On October 31st 2012, we launched our flagship product, Natural Selection 2. Available on Steam, NS2 received critical acclaim and has as of July 2013 sold over 500,000 copies.
The development philosophy of UWE is one of total openness. Many functions traditionally performed in-house by game developers, such as QA and PR, are performed voluntarily by our community. Our game code is open source, and the Spark Engine is home to a thriving mod scene.
