I got to see the latest Star Trek movie. If you liked the last one you get more of the same here. Fun, action and a lot more easter eggs to old time Trek.

SPOILER FOR THE FIRST MOVIE...

I only had one gripe with the movie, but if you were able to get past the red matter MacGuffin in the first movie, then you should be fine with the one nit I had to pick with this one. I'll leave it there as far as details go for the new flick.

After seeing the latest trailer for SHIELD I think I'm developing a character based man crush on Agent Coulson. Now I just need to find a way to get John Barrowman on this show too

Felicia Day complains about the lack of strong female characters in her article about Star Trek Into Darkness. As she mentioned in her article, there are tons of spoilers below so stop now if you haven’t seen Into Darkness yet.

She raises the possibility in the middle of the article that she may be extra sensitive about this topic. I really hope that is the case, because I did not see the female characters as bad off as she did. Not by a long shot.
I will cede the point that there were not enough female characters in the movie overall. But, the entire Star Wars franchise had two, a princess and a queen. Royalty tends to be strong willed. The two female characters in this movie were just common folk.

Uhura did have a few good scenes as mentioned, but I feel that she was there more than to just humanize Spock. So, as Uhura your captain is about to charge headlong into a fight your side is dramatically outclassed for. You put him in his place AND demand that he give you a chance to do your job. That’s way tougher than standing up to a friend, that’s standing up to your boss... 10 points to Gryffindor.

Your bosses only chance to live is to get some blood from the guy your WAY pissed off boyfriend just went to murder, so you decide to beam down into the middle of that fight and try to help. We didn’t see anyone else volunteering to beam anywhere did we?

And the other female character was termed the biggest damsel in distress ever. Do you mean the girl who has been single handedly investigating the dude who is in charge of Starfleet? The dude who is her Dad by the way. I’d imagine that takes big brass ovaries to go against your father when you think he is doing something wrong.

The damsel in distress that cons her way onto the flagship of the United Federation of Planets so she can get to the bottom of what’s going wrong? The woman who volunteers to disassemble one of the most powerful weapons constructed and also manages so save Dr. McCoy’s ass when he fucks it up? The woman that tries to save the lives of the whole crew of the ship she is on by talking her crazy father down?

Sure, at the end she is captured and has to be ‘rescued’. Rescuing someone is a great plot device. You know who had to be rescued in the last movie? Captain Christopher "I'm a badass and no amount of torture will make me give up secrets of the Federation' Pike. Just cause you need to be rescued doesn’t demean you, it makes you human. On top of that, when the rescue was underway she didn’t hide in a corner, she elbowed some guy in the face.

And for the record I agree, a woman character CAN exist without having to be sexually desired by the guy. The underwear scene in the shuttle was totally unnecessary. But, in all honesty, what is Felicia trying to say with the image she chooses to put up on her own blog? Sexiness is hardwired into our brains and we are many centuries away from tempering that.

Either Dr. Marcus or Uhura on their own had way more to do than Sulu and Checkoff combined. The fact that they chose to write in Dr. Marcus and make her part of the crew points to her being involved in the rest of the movies. Hopefully, this means they are at least trying to balance out the main cast. I guess I saw the film much more progressive Felicia, maybe I’m just seeing what I wanted to, I dunno...
