On 30 April 1993 CERN published a statement that made World Wide Web ("W3", or simply "the web") technology available on a royalty-free basis. By making the software required to run a web server freely available, along with a basic browser and a library of code, the web was allowed to flourish.

A little trick I set up last night...
When I tap my phone to my wallet, my phone tells me my bank account balance.
Nifty right?

Here's how I did it, its way simpler than it appears.

First off, you need an NFC enabled phone, my favorite is the Nexus 4!
You also need some NFC enabled stickers, cards, etc. I just happened to get mine from +Web Evolved. They have a set perfect for a wallet application like this, and these in particular play nicely with the Nexus 4:
http://www.webevolved.com/shop/9/Mifare-Ultralight-C-NFC-Cards

You also need an NFC tag writing app. Web Evolved listed some good ones, I opted for NFC Task Launcher, by +Tagstand, along with its accompanying SMS plugin. Both of those can be found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Tagstand

Visit your bank's website and enroll your phone number in their text message teller service. You should then be able to text their number with keyword shortcuts like BAL (balance). Thanks +BayPort Credit Union

NFC Task Launcher, like many NFC writers, has most everything you need to send an SMS already done for you, just fill in the recipient number, the message, and then save & write.

Now when you touch your device to the, in this case, wallet, your phone silently fires off an sms to which you receive a reply a moment later, returning an account balance or whatever you chose. You could stop here, but I chose to enhance the experience just a tiny bit.

Rather than just have an sms notification arrive up top which you open in the messaging app, by using another app, +SMS Popup, you can set rules for certain contacts' messages to display as a popup. You can also further configure these rules to mark the message as read when you dismiss it, among other things. It was the perfect partner app in this application. Grab SMS Popup if you'd like from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Adam+K

So that's it! Using the info I've outlined above, you could end up do so much more. NFC has a ton of possibilities! This use, though simple, is still fairly handy, and will at least make a great parlor trick. Enjoy!

Got my new #Nexus4 set up on +T-Mobile . Did the inevitable speed test to see if it was decent enough to make me not miss +Verizon Wireless 4G speeds too much.

Best Test Results:
Verizon:6729kbps down / 4036kbps up
T-Mobile: 17986kbps down / 2066 kbps up

Verizon averaged about 550kbps down / 400kbps up, while T-Mobile consistently scored over 12000kbps down /  1400kbps up.

Feel like I've been duped all this time...
