Writing tips  -

Here's a new post by Tim Grahl on 6 tips for writers on how to use technology without being distracted by it.
Quick disclosure: This article is going to save you hundreds of hours of wasted time. Time spent doing what most writers dread and resent. Because when it comes to this whole “online marketing” thing, one of the biggest hurdles that we face is that dreaded word… technology! Today I’m going to show you exactly how to wrangle technology and make sure you’re controlling it, instead of the other way around. The problem with technology A few weeks ago...

Tips, Tricks for Bloggers  -

(I just shared this with my group Indie Catholic Authors as well, so I apologize if you're getting it twice.) Recently I read on a secular guru's blog a new tip about connecting with your audience. When you build a sign-up email through MailChimp or the like, ask your readers a question on the final confirmation email. I began asking: What are you struggling with in your spiritual life right now? What's keeping you away from God?

Since I added this, about 10% of my new subscribers have replied. They have shared their struggles with me. I have made a connection, another friend in Christ. I give them a little advice or encouragement and point them to some of my past posts that I think can help them.

I am hoping for 3 lasting results: a loyal audience, a blog more tailored to the needs of my specific audience, and a building up of the Body of Christ. All for asking a quick question.

Editing and publishing  -

Has anybody used Photoshop to make a book cover (for a print book)? I've started working on mine and could use some tips if anyone knows a good source for this.

Here's a great post on how to make a cover for your ebook in Word. I followed these directions and it was pretty easy.
Caring about fantastic book cover design is one of those non-negotiables for all authors. Derek Murphy of Creativindie Covers is a brill

Gil, I actually just redid my earlier book cover slightly to match it. I haven't uploaded the new one to Amazon yet.

The template I downloaded from Create Space was somehow corrupt, so I'll have to do that again. But I'm not savvy about using layers and such. Good thing I like to learn!

Since I am new to  self-publishing I gather MailChimp is a valuable tool to use. Thanks for the input and I will go there and check it out. If you have any advice I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks,
Larry

Introduction
I am a Catholic wife and mother of four boys, dedicated to prayer and to teaching my children to pray. I developed my own homeschooling method to foster a contemplative lifestyle. I blog on that and Carmelite spirituality for adults at Contemplative Homeschool.

My other writing includes Catholic Spirituality Blogs Network (a community of 17 bloggers that I administer), a spirituality column in two diocesan papers, and the e-book Five Lessons from the Carmelite Saints That Will Change Your Life. You can download it free for your Kindle or Nook.
