There is no one food, drink, pill, machine, or program that is the key to achieving optimal health. A person’s overall daily routine is what is most important. Consider the Health Plus top 10 actions for working toward a healthier you in 2017.

Embrace nutrition basics. Eating right doesn’t have to be complicated. Forget the fad diets and adopt a healthy eating plan including a variety of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.
Move more. Aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, such as walking, each week to assist in weight maintenance and overall health.
Be smoke free. Make a plan for the challenges you will face and keep trying your best. Seek support and talk to your doctor about medications that can double your chances of quitting for good.
Schedule sleep. Make sleep a priority to enjoy a more focused, energy-filled lifestyle. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Create a relaxing bed-time routine and change your electronic device settings to the “night-shift” mode.
Prioritize preventive screenings. Many medical conditions can be recognized in the early stages by getting preventive screenings and immunizations. Ask your doctor about what screenings are recommended for you.
Connect with others. Building a community of people who can help you through life’s ups and downs is a vital step towards happiness and good health. Invest in relationships that provide encouragement and accountability to both parties.
Stress Less. Gratitude has been shown to lower stress, which prevents many other physical and mental consequences. Instead of focusing on what your body can’t do or how you wish your body looked, try expressing gratitude for where you are now and the opportunity to make improvements.
Work toward or maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight, work toward losing 5-7% of your weight to significantly reduce your health risks. Studies show that individuals who track their intake using an app, such as myfitnesspal, lose more weight and keep it off compared to those who don’t track.
Set SMART goals. General goals such as “exercise more” are not effective. A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Timely. “I will walk 20 minutes over my lunch break on Tuesdays and Thursdays” is a SMART goal.
Stay positive. Health goals don’t always go as planned. When you face challenges, focus on all of the positive changes you have made, no matter how small they seem. Treat yourself with kindness, like you would a good friend.

We find that one of the easiest ways to keep employees engaged in your health and wellness program is through constant communication. One of our favorite internal tools for keeping your staff involved is the company emails. Consider adding a space each month for one or two health and wellness tips that are targeted for your population.

Need suggestions for tips to share? Here are a few of our favorites:

Go chat with your co-workers instead of sending an email.
Eat a nutritious breakfast every single morning.
For every hour of work you do, take a 5-minute break away from your desk.
Wipe down your keyboard, phone and mouse once a week.
Create a meal plan. Packing a lunch saves money and calories!
Put some inspirational quotes/photos in your workspace to stay motivated!
Wash your hands after using shared spaces like the break room or bathroom.
Work out at your desk! Try shoulder shrugs, arm swings and knee raises.
Park further away from the office to get a brisk walk in before and after work.
Get some fresh air – go for a lap or two around the building during your break.
Snack right. Bring almonds, fresh fruit or chopped veggies to work.
Keep your work area clean and organized to relief stress and prevent germs!

Most of us understand that it’s high time we all start taking ecologically minded steps at work, but knowing exactly where to start can be daunting. Sometimes all it takes to get things moving in a greener direction at work is a simple checklist of items that can be easily implemented by employees and managers. Check out these quick and simple tips that you and your co-workers can easily implement at your workplace or in your business.
Green Office Checklist

1. Provide mugs, glasses, and insulated drink containers (promotional if you like) to all employees for drinks such as coffee, water, and juice, and keep a few extra mugs around for office visitors and guests. If you must have disposable cups hanging around, use ones made from recycled paper, not Styrofoam.

2. Drink tap water, and avoid plastic water bottles (although plant-based bottles from companies such as Primo are a refreshing exception that we’re keeping a close eye on). Buy a water filter if desired, but be sure it’s filtering the stuff that’s actually in your water — which of course means you’ll need to test the water first. Tap water is much safer and more regulated than bottled water, and many bottled waters use municipal water as their source.

3. Change all of your light bulbs to CFLs, LEDs, or other energy-saving alternative lightbulb solutions.

4. Turn off and unplug all computers and electronic devices after hours (with the exception of those providing round-the-clock or off-hours services such as servers, backup devices, etc.). Even when these devices are turned off, they will continue to use electricity unless you unplug the power cord to keep them from charging all night. Likewise, you should unplug coffee machines and other appliances at work when they are not in use so they don’t pull electricity all day.

Tips for Going Green!
Buy local. By all means necessary, purchasing local products offers an impressive way of reducing pollution that results from supply chain logistics such as transportation over long distances.

Adjust the air-condition temperature. Adjusting the air conditioning temperature can save a great deal of energy. By reducing the temperature by just one degree Celsius, one can save up to 10% of energy use annually.

Invest in a travel mug. A travelling mug can come in handy during times of travel. Most importantly, the mug keeps the coffee or tea hot for an extended time and also reduces energy wastage by eliminating the need for re-heating or re-boiling.

Carry out errands in batches. Many people have a tendency of doing errands in bits. It is expensive and environmentally unsound on the account of more vehicles on the road and packaging. Sharing errands or running them in butches saves cash, reduces the overall costs on fuel and cuts back on emissions.

Turn off lights when you’re not in the room. If you are out of a room, why do you need to leave the lights on? You can save energy and money by switching off lights when not in a room or every time you are leaving one a room.

Opt for manual gardening. All sorts of manual gardening save on water usage, protect the soil, and reduce environmental pollution. For instance, use of watering cans to water plants instead of the hose pipe saves on water usage. Manual weeding and land preparations instead of mechanizing the operation or use of chemicals save on fuel costs and limits emission as well as agricultural pollution.
