2 Samuel 9.3: Then the king said, “ Is there not still someone of the house of Saul, to whom I may show the kindness of God?”

When we do good, we as Christians display God's goodness. When we show kindness, we demonstrate God's kindness. Even when we forgive, we convey God's forgiveness. We're not self centred anymore - our entire being is hidden in Christ (Col3.3). Therefore, whatever we do, we do to the glory of the One who saved us (1Cor10.31). So that thanksgivings can go to Him through His working in us (2Cor9.11).

2 Corinthians 12.8-9
Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

We won't always get our desired response when we pray. The reason for this is usually because the all-knowing God has a better plan for us. There's no use getting what we want if an omnipotent God knows what is best for us. The question then becomes; are we mature enough, like Paul, to accept His answer if it's not what our prayer required?

Romans 11.34-35 “For who has known the mind of the Lord ? Or who has become His counselor?” “Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?”

If in our giving it's solely because we expect God to give us a great return on investment - then a gross misunderstanding has occurred. The Word of God isn't a tool we use to get whatever delights our eyes. The Word of God is a living Person (John 1.1-5).

Zechariah 3.1-2
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord , and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”

We should always be conscious of the mercy God had on us, when he flicked the switch and brought Light into our heart's amidst the previous darkness (2Cor4.12, Col1.13).
We are figuratively and literally nothing but brands plucked from fire. We were headed for His wrath but He saved us.

Colossians 1.11
strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and long suffering with joy;

The life of a Christian isn't exempt from pain and suffering. This is why Paul prays for the people of Colossae, that God will grant them the strength to endure and patience to bear such difficult times. It's not possible if not for joy, and joy is ours through the reality of a life after this one.

Acts 9.1 But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord...

We talk a lot about the extent to which God can transform a person from one condition to another. It's a great miracle that a murderer who believed he was in the right completely changed his tune and had his letters preserved through the ages for us to read today. The purpose of God will be realised, no matter what man says, does, thinks or wishes.

Matthew 21:4-5

This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”

There are many people in the Body who desire their own triumphal entry, and at great financial cost will ensure it really captures the imagination of onlookers. But in all things, we take the examples of Jesus to regulate our own behaviour. Let's not seek for an entry of greatness. Instead we should always remember that if we desire to look or be great among people, our calling is to serve in humility (Matthew 20.25-28).
