Independence. So few people actually consider what that means. Independence is the freedom to succeed or fail on your own efforts, without interference, and with full acceptance of the consequences of one's actions. Independence is more than a natural human right - living free is an open door to unlimited opportunity. So why have so many sacrificed the opportunity of independence for the shackles of dependence? Sloth, apathy, ignorance, laziness - the list could go on if I knew enough adjectives. I fear for America. Our culture has become a hive, rather than a collection of independent actors, and this has never had a good outcome in human history. The willingness of the founders of our country to act, against all the odds, to enable men of courage and conviction to live free and self-reliant lives is what gave rise to the most powerful society in human history. Yet many of the people of our nation have lost that sense of responsibility for themselves, and given over their freedom for a false sense of security. Today I ask all men of character and courage to step back and reflect - how deeply do you embody the freedom to choose and create your own destiny? And are you willing to help others understand and begin to value the independence that they have a natural human right to? America can become a model of individual human success for the world again. It must start with one man at a time, teaching one other man to understand his true human nature to succeed on his own merits. It's not too late! Let's take today to reflect on our lives - whether we've fully taken advantage of the freedoms our forefathers died to provide for us. Let each of us commit to helping another to understand the glory of self-reliance and independent thought and action, and to accept the consequences and rewards of true freedom.
