Yay I'm a fan is right! First time was yesterday. My favorite part of this place is that speakeasy feel, and that it is on some random sketchy looking alley. No one would possibly know that there is a Steven Starr bar on the street, and that's the whole point! You feel exclusive. Walking in, it was basically pitch dark, again adding to the whole atmosphere. My eyes had to adjust and I was a little annoyed with that Hollister at the mall throwback, but I was fine once I got used to it. The mixologist was very welcoming and upbeat, which always makes your experience better. I got the "Bartender's Choice" because I got to have a "dialogue" with her about my life, my tastes, etc. She made me a strong tequila strawberry something. It was delicious! My roommate got the Blackmail with rum, champagne, and blackberry juice. Both drinks were fresh, and watching them make it was almost artisan-inspirational. The prices are pretty high-$13 without tax/tip. Definitely recommend trying it out! But of course, wouldn't blow money trying to get super drunk here.

Was there on a Tuesday night, which was just right for the place having a pulse, but not over the top crowds you might expect on a weekend. The bar and drinks are very comfortable, and while the cocktails are of the "craft" variety, I didn't feel pressure in ordering what I wanted. And, much to my pleasure, the drinks I did try were excellent, and the bartenders were somehow able to prepare them without sporting handlebar mustaches. Overall, a great little speakeasy with a Mad Men flare, that makes great craft drinks with out all the pretentious attitude of some of the other center city joints. Visit 2: On a Saturday night at 8pm. Despite being much busier, the service and drinks were still great. The don't let more people in than there are seats for so you don't have to worry about people hovering over you at the bar.

Not many good stories in Philadelphia start with "so we were walking down a seemingly abandoned alleyway." Well, Ranstead Room is one of those stories. A fantastic find, hidden away - barely enough for 20-30 people in there at one time (thus, you will more than likely need to show up, put in your name, then return after grabbing appetizers or dinner somewhere nearby. The drinks are worth the wait. Need to get back there.
