Wow! Humen 1839, composed by Conservatory professors Chen Yi and Zhou Long, will be featured at the China Now Music Festival by the Bard College Conservatory of Music's US-China Music Institute - 巴德美中音乐研习院.

This event features works inspired by three wrenching events in Chinese history: the heroic effort during the first Opium War (1839–42) to confiscate and burn imported opium; the Nanjing Massacre (1937); and the experience of the “sent-down youth” during the Cultural Revolution (1966–76), when more than 17 million urban Chinese youths were sent to the countryside to labor alongside farmers. Works include:

Chen Yi and Zhou Long, Humen 1839
Ye Xiaogang, My Faraway Nanjing
Tony Fok and Su Wei, Ask the Sky and the Earth

Congratulations to #UMKCCons DMA student Bo Li, whose orchestral work "Sleeping in the Wind" was awarded second prize of the Tōru Takemitsu Composition Award 2018!

Juror Unsuk Chin commented on Bo Li's composition, noting, "This is very musical, vivid and idiomatic orchestral music with great contrasts and a developed sense of dramatic line. It has an immediate visual impact, the composer has a keen ear and full control over what he writes. The use of the orchestra is imaginative, both in terms of details and the macroscopic dimension."
