When you query an agent there are a million reasons you might get a form rejection as your consolation prize. And while some of those reasons are directly related to your query and writing, more than you realize have absolutely nothing to do with you. Here are five reasons you might get a pass even if your work is perfect.

Having a lot of books published is great. But those books will never find readers if you don't spend some time marketing them. Current wisdom suggests you are better off writing your next book than spending time on marketing, but I disagree. What good is having a bunch of published books if no one even knows they are out there?

It can be tempting  to re-query the same agent after some time has passed, but agents have a long memory. Don't shoot yourself in the foot by appearing unorganized and unwilling to let go of a project. Resist the urge to double-dip and focus your energy on something new!

Self publishing (done well) isn't free. In fact it can be kinda pricey. If you're just starting out that means forking out a nice chunk of change with no guarantee of any returns. So here's a quick list of ways to save and scrimp so you can afford to publish your book the right way.

I feel awful that I didn't post about the sale on my blog until the last possible minute. Huge ball drop on my part. I can't keep book one for free (because there are rules), but I'm keeping both books one and two for $.99 for a few more days because I have guilt. But then it's back to regular prices, because I have bills and such.
