Dissolve: Variations on a Theme

These are alternates for my "Dissolve" shot for the scavenger hunt. Many of the sugar cubes started falling off of the wall as they dissolved. I started dumping them in the watercolor lid/mixing tray. In the end, I thought the random heap of funky colored cubes might have turned out more interesting than the wall itself.

A day after, once it had dried, the wall looked really interesting, and I tried to shoot it from a different angle (turning it back to a floor) and I did some interesting things to fill in the missing squares in the back.

I keep calling it "the wall" because it bore a slight resemblance to the great ice wall from Game of Thrones. This was a fun, but messy, project :)

Had a busy week last week and I fell out of sync with the Scavenger Hunt, but this is my Dissolve shot.

I made this sugar cube wall for a previous scavenger hunt. It was the floor for my "Unsophisticated" spork shot: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+LauraOckel/posts/AGEEtqBGX6Z

I painted the sugar cubes with watercolor paint, then dripped water downward to make them dissolve. In a minute, I'll post some of the alternate versions I considered for this shot.

Talking of card faces...
My company developed a new kind of card face for our app. The design changes to show larger numbers and suits for the card in the front of the stack. I wrote a press release, which you can see here.

The release says the cards had been in work for over a year. I've actually been working on them since 2013. I'd work on some aspect - choosing a font, size, placement of the numbers and suits - then I'd second-guess and put the whole project aside in frustration. In the final months, I did another 4 revisions to the back suite alone. Once I got to see the cards in the app, in all 100+ solitaire games, I would see new issues to fix and problems to solve.

The end result is better than I had hoped. I've played card games my whole life. Now I get to make them. Better.

Here's the link to the Solitaire Free Pack, if you'd like to see the cards in action on your Android device:

This was my shot for the "FACE" category of the Chrysta Rae Photo Scavenger Hunt.

Apart from the obvious use of face cards, this image is all about the faces. In the cards, the queen seems to look toward the king and he looks away. In the reflection, he looks in her direction as she looks away.

The cards are gold metallic on a white board, illuminated with colored lights. I taped the cards to the flexible board with loops of tape, which allowed me to shift and warp the whole scene until I got the reflections and hues just right. I do a lot with playing cards in my photography because I make solitaire games professionally, so cards are sort of my thing. It's always fun to find a new way to capture something so timeless.

This is my image for UP in Round 20 of the Chrysta Rae Photo Scavenger Hunt.

I had a few ideas for "up" but none I liked as much as this. Some firework shots come together just perfectly, and this was one of them. The fringes from each arm and the spark trails at the bottom give a sense of direction, but the semi-random movements have an organic look, like a sea creature rising to the surface.

Reveals today for the Chrysta Rae Photo Scavenger Hunt, Round 20.
This is my image for CALCULATING.

I read through the book that came with the abacus because I wanted the photo to be accurate. Even the fingers to use are specified - index on top and thumb on the bottom. Each column is a place (hundreds, tens, ones) the bottom beads are worth one, and the top beads are 5. Add the beads by moving them to the center. The number shown here is 6,286.

For as simple as this shot is, it still took dozens of tries before I was happy with the shadows and textures and macro details. I wasn't sure if I'd manage to get any shots done for this round of the scavenger hunt, but being a math geek, I had to do "Calculating".

Art made out of paint chips. I love playing with color :)
I've been doing lots of artsy projects over the last couple of months. Not much photography, but a lot of creative stuff like this. I finally had a chance to scan it in tonight and thought I'd share.
