"Be prepared to let go."

That will obviously be the toughest advice for politicians looking to master social media hashtags in the coming years. Politicians, by nature, are risk-averse, control freaks.

“It’s just using it as an announcement system, like you used to listen to in class: ‘The cafeteria will be serving roast beef, and I will be at this place or that place.’” -- Newark, NJ Mayor +Cory Booker on how the federal government is 'flunking' social media.

In the weeks leading up to Election Day, it may have seemed like every one of your Facebook friends, LinkedIn connections or Twitter followers was posting political propaganda.

I'm amazed by the number of organizations who shun online video in favor of cheap cable ads because the latter is "proven."

Online video is more cost-effective, more targeted and more measurable.

Oh, yeah, it's also got a massive audience.

Did you know?  12% of American adults followed or friended a political candidate or other political figure on social media in 2012.

Is that more or less than you would've guessed (or about right)?

Okay, first the good news: Facebook's changes to its algorithm have helped fuel as much as a 96% increase in engagement for brands. The bad news? The reach of their posts is down 38%.
