I passed by this train station every day for years on my way to school and to work. It was my family's first stop when they moved to Istanbul. "Haydarpasa" means home, Istanbul to me. Now it awaits its uncertain destiny as it's shut down to be replaced by a new development like many others.
Location: Istanbul,Turkey

Running Yosemite on a 2006 Mac Pro

Apple dropped support for the 2006 Mac Pro in Mountain Lion, but you can run Mavericks and now Yosemite just fine if you replace one file in two different places. Why would you want to do this? My Mac has four 3 GHz cores, 12 GB RAM, an SSD, and an upgraded graphics card. It’s fast–even by today's standards–and optimizations introduced in Mavericks and Yosemite help it run even faster.

I’ve been running Mavericks for some time[1]. Over the weekend, I upgraded to Yosemite in a matter of minutes. Everything seems to work just fine–even making calls and sending texts through my iPhone.

First, I removed the SSD from my desktop, plugged it into a USB dock, and performed the Yosemite installation on my 2014 MacBook Air. You can perform the installation on the Mac Pro, but doing it on supported hardware saved me the headache of tricking OS X into installing on unsupported hardware.

Next, I downloaded the Piker-Alpha boot loader[2] and copied it over:

  $ sudo chflags nouchg [SSD Volume]/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
  $ sudo cp ~/Downloads/boot.efi [SSD Volume]/System/Library/CoreServices
  $ sudo chown root:wheel [SSD Volume]/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
  $ sudo chflags uchg [SSD Volume]/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

  $ sudo cp ~/Downloads/boot.efi /usr/standalone/i386
  $ sudo chown root:wheel /usr/standalone/i386/boot.efi

Finally, I replaced the SSD in my desktop. It booted up without a hitch!
