As a person who has been writing or editing in some capacity for more than 25 years I take “content” seriously and try my best, often under intense time pressure, to be thoughtful about what I say. Which is why I became somewhat depressed this past week when I was struck by an epiphany of sorts about all the content, surveys and reports that I’m constantly receiving from tech companies and PR folks.

Introduced initially as a way for small businesses in India to create basic mobile-friendly websites, the product is now global. In roughly a month, according to Mike Blumenthal, Google has seen the creation of approximately 250,000 million websites. This is a dramatic pace — many thousands of sites per day.

It resides within the Amazon app and there are many ways ways to describe it: a social network for shopping, a “shoppable feed,” a shopping Q&A community, and so on. We can debate whether it’s more like Pinterest or Instagram (it draws “inspiration” from both). The objective is pretty clearly to create social engagement on the Amazon app that will lead directly to product purchases.

Today Google is officially killing the “Google Now” brand. It’s not getting rid of the functionality however. That will remain and is being upgraded with an improved design and some new features, including reciprocal connections between search and your personalized content feed.

The screen adds a compelling new element but creates expectations that are not fully realized — as though Amazon is ambivalent or uncertain how far to take the screen as a parallel way of controlling and navigating content.

Almost none of Echo’s 14,000 skills currently take advantage of the screen, which makes sense since the Show is just out. Most Alexa skills are not very useful or interesting. But that could change if developers make use of the screen and transfer some of their smartphone app functionality to the Echo Show. There’s enormous potential.

MomentFeed reported that “an astonishing 84.8 percent of all consumer impressions happen on assets that represent individual stores, showrooms and restaurants. Just 15.2 percent of impressions happen on brand or corporate assets — including the brand’s own website.”

Dex has not really emphasized its consumer-facing properties and spent more time developing a broad set of marketing and progressive operational solutions for SMBs. In the past several years, under the leadership of Joe Walsh, Dex has moved from selling traffic and leads to a suite of services that help them manage their businesses — something approaching a cloud-based “operating system.”

Though the fine is not a surprise, the amount is. The climax of a decade-long antitrust saga that at one time was close to settlement, Google is being punished for allegedly “favoring its own content” in shopping search results.
