Born and raised in Salinas, CA--attended San Jose State University (BA Biology, Dec. 1976). Police officer, sergeant and court officer for the City of Reno, 1979-1993. MS Criminal Justice, The University of Alabama, 1986. Taught criminal justice at Truckee Meadows Community College (Reno, NV), Mount Senario College (Ladysmith, WI), Glenville State College (Glenville, WV), Floyd College (Rome, GA), and Blue Mountain Community College (Pendleton, OR). Worked as a regional training coordinator for the Oregon Dept. of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). Was the first editor-in-chief of for Cygnus Business Media, and of for Elsevier. My job with Elsevier was eliminated in July 2009.

I married Teresa Paul (1964-2006) in 1991. I'm now a widower.

When I was working for Cygnus, I had the opportunity to work from home, and they didn't care where "home" was. I thought about all the places I had lived (I was in Maryland at the time), and decided to come back to the Tri-Cities in southeast Washington. I've never regretted that decision.

I'm not related to Morris Dees or anyone else named Dees. In fact, I have no living relatives.
Bragging rights
1. I have a dog named after a member of the Rolling Stones, but I don't know why (why he was named that, not why I have him). 2. I've delivered five babies. 3. I shot a man in Reno, but it wasn't just to watch him die. 4. I was once the fourth man on a three-man survey crew. 5. I have a four-year degree in molecular biology. Don't be too impressed. I sucked at it. 6. I've written over 500 articles and one book, all published. 7. I am the curator of what I believe to be the world's largest collection of lawyer jokes. 8. I once had a job interview in Abu Dhabi. 9. A sitting judge was once quoted in the newspaper describing me as a "liar and a psycho." Commemorating that, I have a beer stein bearing the emblem of my employer at that time, and the words "Psychotic Liar." below my name. The judge is no longer a judge, and it's a matter of opinion as to whether I am or was a liar and/or a psycho. 10. I have little or no depth perception. 11. I was once a bodyguard for Rev. Billy Graham. 12. I am a whiz at Superman trivia. 13. I drove both Bing Crosby and Patty Hearst to the hospital. Not at the same time. 14. I have no living relatives. 15. I've received two speeding tickets. Both were during the Nixon Administration. 16. One of them was while driving an ambulance. 17. My favorite ice cream flavor is peppermint. 18. I have the second rarest blood type. 19. I've lived in seven states and worked in eight. 20. An English professor colleague once characterized me as "The Grammar Nazi." 21. I didn't know who my biological father was until I was almost 40 years old. 22. I never met him. 23. I am about as close to not having a bachelor's degree as one can be while still having one. 24. My Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is ISTJ. A friend who has some expertise in this once told me, "You are so ISTJ!" 25. One day, I testified in seven different courtrooms.
