The virtual avatar idea brings up a lot of other interesting questions that may be relevant far before any real immortality is possible. For example, could a digital copy of my personality be authorized to go out and buy things it knows I will like? Or as a more serious example, if I were to go into a coma, could my avatar discuss my treatment options with my doctors, including discontinuing life-support if that is what I would want?

With the corresponding increases in virtual environment simulation and big data analysis abilities, it seems very feasible that we could learn all sorts of things just from watching people play and improve on games. Even for robotic platforms like the Boston Dynamics ATLAS, behaviors could be learned from cutting edge virtual environment games that utilize technology such as the Oculus Rift or the Kinect to track a human's actions. But mostly, I'm interested to see new techniques to extract strategy elements from huge amounts of training data. Efficient methods of doing that will be an incredible step towards being able to teach robots to do anything we want.

I'm sure the future of this project will produce even more spectacular results. I'll be very interested to see what models of the flapping dynamics we can generate to learn and exploit cutting-edge abilities of the bird and have them be flown autonomously.
