Hi all, I need some help from the moms with more than 1 kiddo at home. I have a 2.5 year old and a 4.5 month old.

With my first child I followed all the TT "rules" and went by the 90 minute awake time religiously.  I don't remember it being THAT difficult to master putting him down awake.  He caught on very quickly to the brief nap routine and was often already dozing off while I swaddled him.  He was swaddled and in swing until 6 months then easily adapted to being a tummy sleeper in the crib.

Flash forward to now - We've been in the thick of a sleep regression for the past 2 weeks at least.  I've been trying to follow his sleep cues (rubbing eyes, fussing) but even so it usually takes me over an hour to get him down for a nap, he will then sleep average 30-45 minutes.  I usually end up nursing him to full asleep then putting him in swing with paci and white noise.  By the time he finally goes down the awake time is anywhere from 2-3hours (but the sleep cues come on around 1-1.5hrs wake time which is when I begin trying to get him to sleep).  Every now and then his feed time will line up perfectly with a nap time and he'll peacefully nurse to sleep in less than 10 minutes.

Is it time to enforce a stricter schedule vs. following wake times and cues?  He is so different from my first that it's really throwing me off.  When he's awake he's pretty much the happiest baby ever but he's super vigilant about getting put down while drowsy and will pop back awake at the slightest noise.  He's also completely paci dependent to sleep so I know that's working against me in some ways.  If left to fuss he gets hysterical quickly and is even harder to soothe back down.

I can't maintain the current scenario - battling with him for 1-1.5 hours just to get a short nap is wearing my patience thin and it's affecting my interactions with my older child. Any advice or tips appreciated :)

Thanks, again +Amy Maffucci .  It really does help to hear the truth that it can take hours - the books really gloss over that part!  So we did end up in the swing last night and he woke once at 11:30, quick paci replacement and he was good until 2:30, fed, slept til 7:15!  That hasn't happened in over a month!

Today, I went back to the basics  - 90 min awake time, put down awake in swing.  First nap he fell asleep in less than 5 mins and slept for 45. Second nap he did the same thing and has been sleeping for going on 2hrs! I'm shocked! The other times I tried to not nurse to sleep I would just kinda plop him in there.  Now I'm nursing for a minute or two then giving paci while he's still awake.

The biggest issue with the 2nd child is I know we won't always be home to nap every 90mins.  I know how well it worked with my first but it was also very restrictive and he was really attached to sleeping in his crib only for well over a year which was tough at times (I was always jealous of the moms at the park with the stroller sleepers!)  Anyway, I'm going to stick with the swing for a while because it seems to really be working.  Thanks for letting me bounce some ideas off you, my husband is really tired of talking about this haha!

Hi all!  My LO is a few days from 7mos and in the past few days has started fighting naps and waking up after 45mins.  Previously he went down fairly easily and slept from 1hr 15m - 1hr 45m.  Currently we've been working on a nap for 40mins.  He calms down when I come in the room and he's obviously drifting off but starts screaming as I'm reaching the door to leave.  He always goes down awake, crib, white noise, blackout curtains, small lovey.  Our only sleep crutch is the paci (my frenemy).  Is this separation anxiety?  Any tips?  So far hasn't affected night sleep, knock on wood.

Thanks all!  Today was really good.  We followed the 2-3-4 plan and had 2 long naps (1hr45min each).  The am nap was solid whereas the pm nap he woke at 40mins, cried for 2mins, then put himself back to sleep for ~1hr.  He was tired in the 4hr block but I think it's time to drop the 3rd nap so we soldiered on.  Went to bed without a peep, woke after 40mins, cried for 2mins, put self back to sleep.  Color me shocked!!  It's like a switch flipped overnight and all of the sudden he can go from hard crying to self soothing, whereas before it led to hours of crying and he couldn't be settled.  We never felt the need to CIO b/c overall he's a great sleeper but it does feel REALLY good to know he can settle himself.

Night Weaning  -

The time has come to start the night weaning process!  LO is 7.5mos and wakes twice to eat, usually around 11 and 3 but the times can vary +/- an hour.  We've also had some early mornings lately so a 5am feed is not unheard of, just to buy me a little more sleep time!  I plan to do the dreamfeed/tapering off by a minute plan.  Any advice/tips/success stories?

Nothing good to report yet.  Two nights in a row he slept til 12:45 and then went until 5am.  Silly me thought we could just drop the 11 feed without tapering off since he had proved he didn't need it.  I just don't have the resolve in the middle of the night.  (And dad wasn't able to assist this week).   So back to the tapering off plan.  I can't quite commit to setting an alarm for dream feeds because, against all odds, every night I think will be the night that he magically sleeps through.  Seriously, need to get over that already haha.
