Creating a Local Windows Group on Install
One of the recent Installer/Wix issues that needed to be addressed in our product was to automatically create a Windows group on install. Our installer creates and starts a number of Windows services that are run as a particular user with the appropriate pe...

Keystone XL
I'm hoping I can weigh in on the Keystone pipeline before Obama vetoes the bi-partisan bill authorizing its construction. This is one of those political issues that I think highlight how dysfunctional our federal government has become. The stance of Congres...

RIP Stuart Scott
Honestly, I never thought I'd shed a tear over the passing of Stuart Scott. I'll admit that I wasn't the biggest fan of him as a Sportscaster. Initially I thought that Boo-yah and all the other catch-phrases were sort of gimicky. I just wanted the sports sc...

I want to get this down in writing, though it is certainly only a half-baked idea. It isn't even really an idea, but a stream of thoughts. And this is why I need to get it down: it's a thought experiment, or a series of thought experiments, a hypothesis tha...

Begging Your Pardon
I have to get something off my chest, and it's petty and trite just as all my little pet peeves are. Consider it a public service announcement: "Begging the question" and "raising the question" are not the same, and normally when people say the former, they...

Moby-Dick, or The Book
I finished reading Moby Dick last night. I don't know how long the voyage of the Pequod was, but I'm certain it was nowhere near as long as it took me to read the book. I added it to my Goodreads account five years ago. I'm not sure if I added it because I ...

What Does That Have to do With the Price of Oil?
One thing that I really haven't heard anyone talk about concerning this precipitous drop in the price of oil is how OPEC hasn't cut their production. In years past when the price of oil threatened to drop liek this, OPEC would only need to threaten to cut p...

We had good food and very good service. The decor, as mentioned, is like someone took an old Paris bistro and expanded it to an American size. We started with the duck prosciutto, which was good, and marinated olives, which were outstanding. My wife's steak-frites was excellent. I had the pates printeniere which was fine for what it was, but was my mistake in ordering something too conservative. I had heard great things about the foie gras creme brullee. I'm a big creme brulee fan, so had to order it. I guess I am also a creme brulee traditionalist, however. Le Grand's version is served more like a curd with the foie gras whipped in after the fact and served in a candied shell bowl. I understand why it is done this way, but miss having that light, crunchy brullee crust. The candied bowl is too thick to eat in a similar way. It was mid-week, so not at all busy and the service was attentive but not intruding.
