Belated Tribute to Robin Williams

I guess I never really thought of Robin Williams as a comedian. I thought of him as a positive force, a good guy who happened to be on TV and in the movies, and happened to be extraordinarily energetic and funny. I don’t know how many people actually thought of Robin Williams as an influence, because what he was doing was so fast and frenetic that it was difficult to conceive of following that act. Robin Williams was a terminal degree, the furthest one could go in a certain direction of comedy. He was unique, and his talent was almost scary. RIP. And let’s be real here: he wasn’t sick. He wasn’t “suffering from bipolar disorder.” He wasn’t “manic-depressive.” He was a genius. There’s a difference. #RIPRobinWilliams

How to stop addictions – alcoholism or whatever they may be

I am now on my 46th day of sobriety. Here is what I know about re-habituation & self-actualization:

1. A support group, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous (which serves alcoholism & all addictions) is not necessary. However, a social support structure is. If you are going to a support group, commit to it fully or don’t bother. If you are not going to attend a support group, commit to daily check-ins with 2-3 people, one family and one friend, or two friends if your family relationships are unavailable or unsupportive. I use my parents and my friend of over two decades, Eric Selle.

Longevity:
- I have known my parents 100% of my life; and
- I have known Eric 62% of my life.

2. Don’t feel embarrassed or like you are destined to be the person you’ve been. Who really knows? Look straight forward into the future. Build your future proactively. Analyzing the past or psychoanalyzing your current mind is not a good way to focus or spend time as you adapt.

3. Do some reading on addiction recovery. The Power of Habit is an incredible book. It’s a bestseller and discusses reframing your habits, starting with a keystone habit and radiating out to all your negative habits. By assessing your habit cues, replacing the routine, and giving yourself a reward that fills similar biological/mental/spiritual needs, you recode your brain with healthy habits. A primal, relatively unevolved, prehistoric part of your brain -- the basal ganglia -- is in control of cravings. Don’t fight them. Work with them. Steer them toward the routines that indicate a successful, happy, and meaningful  life.

4. Stretch your boundaries. Don’t get too hyper or imbalanced in your approach, but find out what your limits are as a person. You will feel more dedicated to your new, sober mindset when you realize your full capacities. Don’t wait on life. Push yourself forward. Stay up all night working on a creative project or on income-related work (which I did Thursday, writing straight through the night). Or even clean your house. Go easy on yourself, but don’t be afraid to hoist yourself to a new plateau.

5. Establish terrifying, horrible sanctions (a stipulation as opposed to the negative connotations of a punishment) and awesome, inspiring rewards.

Mine are:
- Sanction: Rehab if I have one drink, ever; and
- Reward: Trips to Mexico and LA to celebrate my success, push forward my career, and reconnect with sober buddies.

Hm, which one of those options sounds more fun? I pick choice B.

#6. Commit suddenly, swiftly, and decisively. You don’t need to prepare. Catch yourself off-guard. Commit to your family member or friend, whomever is closest to you. 

#7. Exercise & eat healthy. Three days a week, primarily starting with cardio, slowly increasing as you go. Then focus on your core, followed by your other muscle groups. Go very slowly when you start so your body is not overly stressed or the situation potentially becomes dangerous. Stretch afterwards, and have a smoothie with fresh produce (organic and local for optimized potency), including vegetables and ideally supergreens such as blue green algae, spirulina, chlorella or wheat grass. If you are wanting to grow muscle, take a protein shot with it. Get probiotics from kombucha, real sauerkraut, and real yogurt.

#8. Relax. Stay calm. Maybe meditate. Go and watch movies by yourself. Block out your day and become more productive so you have time to snooze.
