This is a repost of the first episode of the series The Power of Attention, Conversations with John Sherman.

The audio in this version is still not as good as we would like it to be. We apologize for this. The next episodes will be better. Thanks for your patience and your support!

Episode 1: "Answers to Common Questions About the Practice of Focused Attention"

John Sherman answers five common questions about the practice of focused attention.

1. Is the practice of focused attention the same as mindfulness meditation?

2. Is the practice of focused attention a matter of declining to attend to unwanted thoughts and feelings?

3. Is it really possible to decide what you attend to?

4. Does focusing attention bring about altered states and mystical experiences?

5. Is focused attention a form of self-inquiry?

LOOKING AT YOURSELF IS THE ESSENCE OF SELF-INQUIRY
"From the very beginning, my work has been to understand the self-inquiry of Ramana Maharshi. I knew all along that the gift of the love of life that I had found was entirely a result of a desperate wrestling match I engaged in with Ramana's simple advice while in solitary confinement in prison. But having won the prize with no real practical understanding of how it had come to pass, I was not willing to inflict on people a half-baked message and offer no practical instruction on what to do. Now, twenty years later, I do have a clear, practical understanding of the essence of self-inquiry, thanks in large part to the patient willingness of many hundreds of people who have endured my failed attempts to say what I really wanted to say." Dear friend,

We are sending this message to everyone who is connected to us in any way, and has shown an interest in our work in the last year. If you are registered or subscribed in more than one of those outlets, you will see this message more than once. Please forgive us for the repetition.

We assume that you see some value in our work, and that you might be interested enough in it to donate money to keep it alive.

We charge no money for our work because we really have nothing to sell. The act that we offer is nothing more than a simple movement of attention that one must do for oneself, and all that follows is grounded entirely in the development of intelligent self-reliance. But it certainly does take money to bring it to you and everyone else, and to provide direct assistance to those who need it. And because we charge no money, we must rely on donations to cover those costs.

We invite you to see for yourself the power of this simple act in the lives of people who have done it here: http://youtu.be/Z9rLG5mqYXE

You will also find audio and written reports here: http://www.justonelook.org/look/reports

You have an opportunity now to become an active participant in a decisive effort to bring this amazing discovery to the world, and sanity and self-reliance to humanity as a whole.

Please make a donation in any amount today at http://www.riverganga.org/go/easydonate

We certainly do not want you to do without so you can send us a donation. However, if many contribute, a small donation can go a long way.

Although you may not have money to give at the moment, your natural intelligence, and your life experience can help in working with us to achieve a reliable financial foundation for this work. So please, if you are not already a member of our forums at http://www.truthisallthatmatters.org, consider joining this conversation there.

Thank you for your time and attention to this critical matter.

John and Carla Sherman

P.S.  Your donations go to the RiverGanga Foundation, which is the 501(c)3 non-profit foundation we have operated for the last fifteen years to fund our work.

Episode 2: "The Mind"

The sense of self, the experience of a me who has a relationship with its own mind, and the appearance of the mind itself occur in the mind. Mind is where all the joy, satisfaction, dissatisfaction, happiness, and unhappiness occur, along with the recognition and definition of those states.

Over the centuries, we have created deeply appealing ideas that hold the mind responsible for all the trouble we face as human beings. From this springs the deep-seated, ancient tendency to demonize the mind, which takes many forms.

In our work, we do not hate the mind and we do not seek to erase it, silence it, or transform it. We seek only to heal it from the sick fearfulness that has warped it and has spoiled our experience of our lives and of our very self.

In this episode, John Sherman speaks about the nature of the human mind, its source, its content, and its relationship to the brain.

LOOKING AT YOURSELF IS THE ESSENCE OF SELF-INQUIRY

Much of our life is spent in the practice of trying to change our
thoughts, increase our understanding, decrease our ignorance, get
better emotions, hold onto love and get rid of hate, hold onto peace
and get rid of aggression, always in an effort to change the story so
we can become  something good. We are constantly monitoring the
unfolding story of me to help us decide whether what is coming to us
or through us is good, bad, or indifferent, and whether it should be
killed off or held onto.

But this practice never really works. Actually, nothing really  works.
No education, no understanding, no philosophy, no therapy, exercise,
or  diet really works. The story of me continues to unfold on its own
terms.

Now, it is absolutely understandable and justifiable that I  would
believe myself to be this story, but it's just not true. It is a false
belief about the most fundamental reality of what I am. And  all of my
misery, my hatred, my aggression, my suffering, all that I project
onto you and all that I do to try to make myself be what I am not
flows from this underlying belief that I am this mind and I am in
danger here.

The act of looking at yourself is the essence of the  self-inquiry of
Ramana Maharshi. All that's needed is to get a taste of what it feels
like to be me. That brings an end to all questions as to what I am,
and eliminates the root cause of all our problems, which is the fear
of life.

The only problem in human life is the sense that there is something wrong, a sense that life is not what it should or could be—a sense that there is something missing, something I must get if I am ever going to be satisfied.

What causes this is the fear of life, which strikes quickly and silently very early on for most of us, most likely at birth. This brief moment of contraction in the mind produces an unconscious environment of fear and distrust upon which our entire psychology is formed.

The fear of life is not a feeling; it is unconscious. It is before consciousness and it cannot be addressed directly. Our minds and our personalities are formed in the context of that fear.

Directing attention to what you refer to when you say "me", trying to get a taste of what it feels like to be you, will disintegrate the context of fear instantly. In time, your entire psychology will be reborn. Old destructive patterns of thought and behavior will disappear as new, healthy ones take their place.

One cause. One cure. It's that simple.
Introduction
Our work, our purpose, and the goal of all our efforts is to make one simple insight into the root cause of all human misery and one simple act of inward looking universally available and accessible within the entire human community.

Since 1999, John Sherman meets with people from all walks of life to speak about the fear of life, which is what spoils human life, how that comes to pass, what gives rise to it in the first place, how it manifests in the life in general, and what every person can do to be free of it once and for all. In these meetings, John speaks from his experience, listens to reports, and answers questions. Carla Sherman, his wife, organizes the events and is the executive director of the non-profit foundation that provides the financial support for their work.
