Music Therapy for Seniors

Music has been proven to contribute a lot to an individual’s well-being. It is best known for its healing properties in the psychological aspect. For seniors, music therapy also has numerous benefits.

Memory
There are many instances when we listen to a particular song and an event or memory suddenly pops in our mind. The reason for this is that we associate music with events, people, or things that are somehow significant. A particular song could trigger a recall of different memories. For example, a slow, sad song could remind you of a past lover, or the loss of a loved one. An upbeat and happy song could remind you of a particular joyous event in your life.

Relaxation
Music also helps greatly in setting a particular type of mood or vibe. Because of this, a particular type of music can help in reducing stress, and lessening anxiety. Slow songs in particular, are the best choice to prevent agitation. This type of music could be classified as “sedative music.”

Coordination and Mobility
There is also a type of music that helps promote movement among the elderly. Upbeat music with quick paces and strong beats are best for this. With this type of music, the body naturally responds by following the rhythm. An elderly could respond by tapping their toes, swaying of the arms and body, and even dancing.

How Poor Hygiene Can Be A Bad Sign For Elderlies

Proper Hygiene is a vital part in any lifestyle and at any age. However, as we grow old, hygiene becomes more than just an issue of being clean. Here are 3 things that may be causing your elderly’s poor hygiene habits.

1.Problems With Memory

One reason why some elderly have poor hygiene could be that they don’t remember. It is possible that they may have forgotten whether or not they bathed that day. They may also have trouble differentiating days or remembering dates of when they last took a bath. In this sense, poor hygiene could be a result of a condition that affects memory such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s.

2.Depression

Depression and other psychological problems could also be the cause of your loved one’s poor hygiene. This could mean that they feel unmotivated and uninterested in doing any sort of daily routine/activity.

3.Weakened Senses

Another reason could be that your elderly may just have weakened senses. They may not even smell their own order or notice the uncleanliness of their body. This would lead them to believe that they do not need to bathe or clean yet.

How To Prepare Your Elderly To Move To An Assisted Living Facility

The idea of staying in an assisted living facility may not be acceptable to an elderly person. To him, it usually means that he will lose his independence. However, to ensure his safety as well as for your own peace of mind, he needs to move. You can use the following ways to prepare him for the move.

Explain the need to move.

Carefully and respectfully explaining such need can get the cooperation of the elderly. Let him understand the situation he is in and how the both of you can benefit from him staying in an assisted living facility.

Prepare his belongings.

As much as possible, prepare things that he likes. It will make it easier and faster for him to get comfortable with the new place if he can see familiar things around him.

Visit him often.

Not visiting him will only make him feel that you just want to get rid of him.

You can trust that Bella Care Home is the right assisted living facility for your elderly. We offer various services that can help him. For more information about each of these services, please contact 559-259-6228 or 559-905-5538.
