A master key has great utility for providing access to a limited group as long as only that group has access. This is true of both the physical world and on the internet. If someone else has a key to your bank account then they can do whatever you can do. Given a long enough period of time ALL master keys will be made available and require that everyone have changed their locks BEFORE that happens.

Good to think about these things when reading the news.

Password policies are almost uniformly atrocious. Glad there is movement in the right direction.

Looking for something that doesn't exist doesn't mean the time was wasted. I am sure many useful things were developed in the search.

Kudos to the Boston Globe for linking to the arXiv (free) versions of the papers.

I too am surprised at the lack of familiarity with Kalman filters. Powerful, easy to write and understand. What's not to like?

''Marjorie Rice, a San Diego housewife in her 50s...developed her own notation and method and over the next few years discovered another four types of pentagon that tile the plane."

Stories like these keep me up at night thinking about symmetries in nature.

China is building a radio telescope more than 2.7 times as large as Arecibo. Interesting that this got NO coverage in the US.

I have been turning my chair to look backwards the last few weeks in preparation for exploring the void ahead. Happy Birthday Prof. Rubin.
