Ever wonder why whales do this? Although less nimble than dolphins that also often breach, whales will occasionally jump out of the water during feeding. When the huge mass of a whale flops back onto the water it's typically over a school of fish. This in turn causes a shock wave that stuns the fish and renders them motionless so the whale can easily eat them without a prolonged chase.
