I can't help wondering how many of us have written "Open only if I die" letters to our children. There's comfort, I think, in knowing that if you leave this world unexpectedly your children will know how much you loved them. Even if you've told them you love them daily (and how many of us can truly say that we do that), there's something about leaving behind a letter for them to find. A letter is permanent, something they can hold in their hands and read over and over. It's lasting, a treasure worth more than anything you could've bought them.
