So, I could not properly express how let down I was by Elysium. Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, good looking trailer... but man, what a complete drek of sci-fi hodge podge and lazy writing. There is not a single story beat that comes as a surprise, nor anything about the core plot that doesn't feel arbitrary. Nothing in this film grows beyond the basic story beats in the trailer, and the world these people inhabit is poorly put together.
So, the next day, I watched Oblivion.
Talk about a palette cleanser! Tom Cruise in what is easily among the best sci-fi of the year, the movie has plenty of world building, and incredibly good pacing. It avoids wearing any of it's scenarios too long and avoids them becoming too cliche as a result. I cannot emphasize how incredibly satisfied I am with this film without delving into spoilers. But definitely way better than the trailer led me to expect, and I'm thankful for that.
