Massachusetts was founded by the Puritans to b a “City Upon a Hill”. How is that vision from 400 years ago doing? Let’s look at the ballot questions for 2012. One of them relates to IT and automobile repair, which is probably not something the Puritans could have had an opinion regarding. The other two are about medical marijuana and assisted suicide. Though I have not looked at any opinion polls, my guess is that both of these will fail. Nonethe...

A lot of people have asked me about this in the past, I finally hacked this up. Set your app to use the Light or Dark theme (as a setting, or override) in one line of code using my ThemeManager helper library for Windows Phone. I've also pushed to NuGet source, assembly, plus created a GitHub repo with it. http://www.jeff.wilcox.name/2012/01/phonethememanager/
I've just pushed a small library that I created this evening to the world and wanted to share details on the short project in this post. (NuGet assembly, NuGet source, project on GitHub). One of t...

The latest release of 4th and Mayor is now live in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Version 3.2 adds support for the brand new Foursquare restaurant menus (WP7 has it now before iPhone even does!) as well as QR code check-in support. Find out more here: http://blog.4thandmayor.com/post/16260239333/4th-mayor-3-2-is-now-live-in-the-windows-phone
4th & Mayor 3.2 is now live in the Windows Phone Marketplace! You’ll be happy to know that Foursquare’s innovation is continuing at a record pace - several days ago restaurant menus (through a...

I just realized, I've completely neglected all my Google+ followers about all the Seattle storms and mess. I've been really good about telling Facebook and Twitter though! So you're all SUPER LUCKY. Cause you're spared.

I've always wondered this myself. I have two Samsung 30" 305Ts (discontinued product now) and just don't see enough innovation in these awesome displays.

Probably will be replacing with an Apple 27" display at the similar resolution soon.
Folks: Five and a half years ago, I wrote a posting marveling that the Dell 30″ LCD monitor was selling for $1279. My HP-brand 30″ monitor seems to be flaking out, so I was considering replacing it wi...

Awesome - please help support 4th & Mayor, the independent, fun foursquare app for Windows Phone that I built and support in my spare time. Thanks!

Blogged: a simple StaticMap control for Windows Phone, good for Pano/Pivot/etc. #wpdev http://www.jeff.wilcox.name/2012/01/jeffwilcox-maps/ (as used in 4th & Mayor) - supports Bing Maps and Google Maps
One of the nice visuals of 4th & Mayor is the animation and display of a simple area map whenever you view a place in the app. Unfortunately, most map controls, such as the Bing Maps control inclu...

If you're a Windows Phone developer, please start using GZipWebClient: I'm seeing performance improvements in my app of 50-80% and can't wait to ship the update with that support. http://www.jeff.wilcox.name/2012/01/windows-phone-gzip-support-by-morten/
Please ship your next Windows Phone app or app update using this awesome GZipWebClient library by Morten Nielsen (NuGet, blog post, source) – it's been out there since August and we should all be ...

Another helping of UX tips for #wpdev folks - taking a look at MetroRadio and simple spacing, icon and alignment fixes! http://www.jeff.wilcox.name/2012/01/metroradio-design/
I've harped on this one a few times before in my Windows Phone Metro Design Guidelines post for devs. But it's time for another helping! Metro Radio is a slick and functional Pandora applicati...
