Hard Drive Reliability Stats Update – Sep 2014 by @BackBlaze http://bit.ly/1riY7ff  #HDD #Storage #BigData #Interesting
At Backblaze we now have 34881 drives and store over 100 petabytes of data. We continually track how our disk drives are doing, which ones are reliable, and which ones need to be replaced. I did a blog post back in January, called “What Hard Drive Should I Buy?” It covered the reliability of ...

To those installing OS X Yosemite Beta: Be sure to disable TRIM for any 3rd party SSDs before installing or you will not be able to boot!
It appears that OS X Yosemite no longer loads modified kernel extensions when booting, which results in a boot failure. Since 3rd party SSDd TRIM support involves modifying of kext files, if you leave it enabled, those kexts wont load, which results in a boot failure. http://bit.ly/1kZgsZK #OSX #Yosemit #SSD #troubleshooting
If you have already installed Yosemite and are unable to boot, follow these steps (From http://www.cindori.org/trim-in-os-x-yosemite/) Boot your ...

The SSD Endurance Experiment: Only two remain after 1.5PB by @TheTechReport http://bit.ly/Yds6Lb  #SSD #Storage #BigData #interesting
You won't believe how much data can be written to modern SSDs. No, seriously. Our ongoing SSD Endurance Experiment has demonstrated that some consumer-grade drives can withstand over a petabyte of writes before burning out. That's a hyperbole-worthy total for a class of products typically rated ...

New research: Hard Drive Temperature – Does It Matter? | by @Backblaze http://bit.ly/hddtemp1 #hdd #failure #storage #disk #drive #dx
How much does operating temperature affect the failure rates of disk drives? Not much. The unlimited online backup service provided by Backblaze requires a lot of storage. In fact, we recently passed the 100-petabyte mark in our data center. This means we use disk drives. A lot of disk drives.
