AIOx Coated Films - The New Flexible Packaging Barrier

AIOx coating is the application of a thin and highly transparent coating of aluminium oxide on packaging films that give the materials extremely high moisture and gas barrier properties that rival those of aluminum foils and metalized films. It is the only truly high-barrier flexible packaging material available that is transparent and allows the packaged product to be clearly visible.

This not only provides a big marketing plus but also facilitates operations like the optical scanning/inspection and metal detection during and after the packaging process, something that is not possible with aluminum foils or metalized films. The levels of barrier available from AIOx coated films are far superior to those provided by other transparent flexible packaging materials like PVDC-based structures and EVOH co-extrusions.

Furthermore, moisture an gas permeabilities are not affected by high levels of temperature or relative humidity and are independent of the base film thickness thus enabling maximum downgauging of packaging materials.
An important feature of AIOx coated films is that they are microwavable, which aluminum foils and metalized films are not. As they can be retorted as well, this makes them ideally suited for the packaging of processed foods that can be microwave heated or cooked in the pack itself before consumption..

The AIOx films are also supplied with a special coating that protects the AIOx layer and improves and retains good adhesion to printing inks and adhesives.

AIOx coating is cutting edge technology with only a handful of manufactures being equipped to produce this material. Here at Cheever we have partnered with one of the main makers of this material. If you think your next project could benefit from an AIOx coating, please contact us for our insight and guidance on this new material. www.cheeverspecialty.com

What Paperless office?

Not so fast here, we have all heard the Paperless office is coming. Even in our era of smartphones and tablets, American offices still use roughly 1.6 trillion pieces of per every year according to Christopher Mims at the Wall Street journal. This consistent use of paper is one big reason why HP has just paid $1 billion for Samsung Electronics’ printing and copying business.
People have been predicting paper’s imminent demise for decades, but it’s been stubbornly enduring in the face of new technologies. This reinforces that change takes time. Some 60 percent of office paper use isn’t optional, according to industry analysts. So what about the other 40 percent, when asked about this, workers simple said “they like paper”.
It’s cheap, weights next to nothing and if it drops, it doesn’t shatter like you know what.. With that said, Office paper use peaked in 2007, and has been in decline at a rate of 1 to 2 percent a year “for the first time in history” thanks largely to Millennials and startups - this may be a generational thing. “It is always dangerous to say, ‘This time it’s different,’ but this time it just might be.”
