Wow... I kind of totally agree. Even though I may lack experience in the subject. I have been doing all kind of similar work in my company for the last years: merging office workbooks in an intranet database, bridging accounting and hr systems for payroll process, creating a lightweight CRM, etc...

Lately I have been working on GMail Contacts API: http://code-crafts.blogspot.fr/2013/06/retrieve-contacts-with-google-contacts.html, and I am following up with a LinkedIn article soon. All of this experience brings me to the point where I will create (probably in a startup or open source context) a sort of "lean" CRM solution.

I do agree that software development is broadly speakly only about solving other people's problems. But a problem can be solved in so many different ways... that's not even accounting for the fact that the same problem can and WILL evolve over time. So yes, "A problem looks like a job that your customer needs to get done at a specific time, in a specific situation and in the proper context." Now the question is: "How to we anticipate what is the timing, the situation, and the context that create an opportunity to create a useful product?"

Yeah... in the real world, practicality wins over optimality. Things change too fast nowadays, you don't really have time to over-engineer.
