Surprisingly critical review of "the fall of the faculty". Whatever the misgivings of the blame game (the faculty was certainly complicit in this), the growth rate of administrative positions in US universities has been quite astonishing, with a questionable upside. In contrast, the average US college in the 19th century had precisely four (4) administrators: A president, a provost, a registrar and a librarian. Also, I am surprised that no one invokes Parkinson's law to explain this. This is not the first time where bureaucratic overhead unrelated to the core mission of an institution (in this case teaching and research) grows unchecked. For a historical perspective, see: http://www.berglas.org/Articles/parkinsons_law.pdf
