We have a companion animal initiative called Animal Family Alliance. Although we do not have funding, we try our best to refer you to other organizations and resources that may help.
Laliya's caretaker, an auto rickshaw driver, brought him for treatment to In Defense of Animals (India)’s Turbhe Rescue Center in Mumbai. Laliya had a wound near his tail that had become infected. He is a very obedient dog and jumped out of the rickshaw for treatment when his caregiver asked him to. However, as soon as he saw the vet coming to treat him, he got scared and jumped back into the rickshaw. With a little coaxing, he finally agreed to treatment. The wound was a fairly easy one to treat, and as soon as it was over, back into the rickshaw he went and he and his caregiver were soon on their way.

Thank you to all our wonderful supporters for helping us treat even small animal emergencies like Laliya’s, that otherwise would likely go untreated.

“Arrogant” and “Remorseless” Former Police Officer Sentenced in Illegal Elk Killing

Disgraced former Boulder Police officer Sam Carter was convicted back in June for his role in the January 1, 2013 killing of a beloved neighborhood elk, Big Boy, in the Mapleton Hill area of Boulder, Colorado (http://on.fb.me/1uGpyzP).

At his recent sentencing hearing, Carter was described as “arrogant” and “remorseless” by District Attorney Stan Garnett, who pushed for the maximum sentence in the case. Unfortunately, the judge felt Carter had suffered enough - having lost his job as a police officer and been convicted of several felonies in the killing of Big Boy. Carter was sentenced to four years probation, 200 hours community service, and 30 days on a work crew.

Like District Attorney Garnett, we feel like Carter should have received the maximum sentence, but what do you think about the sentence? Fair? Or should Carter have received the maximum - jail time? Let us know in the comments section below.

You can read more about Carter’s sentencing here:

Help Elephants Bamboo and Chai at the Woodland Park Zoo

Contact Seattle's Mayor and City Council Now

Seattle's mayor, Ed Murray, has started a dialogue for the "proper habitat for elephants" at the Woodland Park Zoo (WPZ). Friends of the Woodland Park Zoo Elephants and IDA need your voice to urge the mayor and members of Seattle’s city council to order the retirement of Bamboo and Chai to a sanctuary now.

Recently, Watoto, the WPZ's only African elephant, was found collapsed on the ground and unable stand. The zoo decided to euthanize Watoto because, even with the use of heavy machinery and straps, she was still unable to stand.

Watoto lived a tragic and miserable life. Stolen from the wild when she was only two years old, she was confined for display at zoos until her premature death at only 45 years of age. With expected lifespans of 60-70 years in the wild, Watoto’s death is sadly commonplace amongst elephants confined in zoos.

When someone tells you it cant be done, it's more a reflection of their limitastions, not yours.
