The biggest failing of Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart's new comedy isn't the way it plays with stereotypes but its lack of ambition in challenging inequality.

Contempt and mockery may help marginalize the organization that L. Ron Hubbard founded. But to persuade its members to leave, we need to try to understand why they believe.

Anthony Storr's "Feet of Clay" is an interesting exploration of spiritual gurus and why the can engender such strong beliefs among their followers. He looks at both nominally secular and religious figures, which suggests that there isn't a fundamental difference between the way that each can create compelling systems of belief. http://www.amazon.com/Feet-Clay-Anthony-Storr/dp/0684834952

A controversial piece lambasting studios and networks for focusing on actors of color sets a useful marker for just how far we have to go to achieve equality in Hollywood.

Liberals and conservatives make a common mistake when we ask culture to conform to political norms, rather than to push beyond them.

Protecting copyright shouldn't make it impossible for documentary filmmakers or journalists to use clips from movies.

The characters on Lena Dunham's show have broken boundaries and been wildly self-indulgent. This year, they discovered that selfishness isn't always what you think, and that boundaries and limits can be liberating.

The greatest villain on "Scandal" gives us the perfect explanation for why Fox News is so effective, and so scary.

Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight's creation is responsible for so many of the unruly women we see in pop culture today.

Suggesting that the only value of a story is in its plot is to argue that it's not much of an accomplishment at all.

"Glee" helped set the pace for discussions of marriage equality, but its trans characters were outpaced elsewhere, and it could never get the issue of arts education off the ground.

At least one member of Kappa Delta Rho is defending the chapter's pictures of unconscious women as satire. But if you want to claim you're doing satire or social commentary, you're holding your own behavior to much higher standards.

Story
Introduction
I'm the culture writer for the Washington Post's Opinions sections, which means I think big thoughts about Captain America, Archie Comics, and the sexual politics of Game of Thrones for a living. Before I was at the Post, I founded the culture and sports sections at ThinkProgress, wrote about federal personnel policy for Government Executive, and was the fact-checker for National Journal. I live in Washington, DC. And She-Hulk is my alter ego.
