Maldives parliament passes first ever domestic violence bill. The bill, yet to become law, criminalises domestic violence and outlines punishments for violators and protections for victims. But does it go far enough? How much protection does it offer to women who report their husbands/partners for violence? What acts or omissions constitute domestic violence? Answers to these questions are important in an increasingly conservative Muslim society such as the Maldives.
"Gender-based violence is ubiquitous: no country can claim to have eliminated it, and one in three women will be its victim in her lifetime. In some countries, as many as seven in ten women are affected. " http://www.voanews.com/policy/editorials/The-Gender-based-Violence-And-HIV-Connection-146484155.html .
