Maldives parliament passes first ever domestic violence bill. The bill, yet to become law, criminalises domestic violence and outlines punishments for violators and protections for victims. But does it go far enough? How much protection does it offer to women who report their husbands/partners for violence? What acts or omissions constitute domestic violence? Answers to these questions are important in an increasingly conservative Muslim society such as the Maldives.

"Gender-based violence is ubiquitous: no country can claim to have eliminated it, and one in three women will be its victim in her lifetime. In some countries, as many as seven in ten women are affected. " http://www.voanews.com/policy/editorials/The-Gender-based-Violence-And-HIV-Connection-146484155.html .

"Since we often cannot see what is happening before our eyes, it is perhaps not too surprising that what is at a slight distance removed is utterly invisible" - Chomsky.

Why is the idea that desire is the master of reason still causing fear and loathing in philosophy?

Nicholas Kristof originally shared:

The world's worst humanitarian crisis is the famine in Somalia, and it's aggravated by mass rape. My column reports on my visit: http://nyti.ms/oG35lV Let me know what you think, especially about the end of the column where I respond to critics.

"As long as [Arab] dictators back us, it doesn't matter what the population thinks." Chomsky discusses democracy and American hegemony in the Arab world.
10 years of terror: The 19th century ... 2001 ... today. Noam Chomsky sees hegemonic powers showing extreme contempt for democracy – and acting in ways they know will increase terrorism

Beautifully shot, heartbreaking real, the film presents the everyday horror we’re all sort of living with: global warming is real and it feels like the end of everything. Though there probably isn’t a more hot-button issue, except maybe healthcare and abortion, the subject has been so politicized here the conversation has almost stopped. It’s stopped because most of us are hopeless. But it’s also stopped because, as Shenk told me during the Patron’s Brunch, it doesn’t have a world leader, not here in America anyway. It certainly has a leader, and a charismatic one, in Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives.
