Glyph Talk 1/5: The Senders

I’ve got a series of related topics and theories when it comes to the glyphs and the glyph language we see coming from the portals. In this first post, I’m going to focus on the senders themselves. Before I begin I want to set out a couple of definitions.

-- A meme is an idea or concept that spreads from person to person within a culture.
-- A memetic language is a language based on units of culture.

Based on the research gathered from around the world and shared with me (thank you Agent Codon011), I want to propose three theories.

Theory 1: Glyphs are a universal memetic language.
Theory 2: There are two different ideological groups of senders.
Theory 3: There are some glyphs that one side will not use because it is not part of their culture.

Theory 1: Glyphs are a universal memetic language
Rather than an actual written language like humans have today, glyphs impart concepts directly to the viewer’s brain where they are mulled over and considered by the subconscious long after the we have stopped looking at them. Glyphs, by design, transfer cultural ideas rather than just sending messages, instructions, or warnings. They imprint on us. The patterns of the message come to our minds immediately.

“Defend Message …  …”

Did you think “Answer Idea/Thought”? Some of you did. Some of you didn’t. For the ones who did, the pattern is engrained within your subconscious. You may not act on this concept. You have free will. But the pattern is there and urging it forward.

Theory 2: There are two different ideological groups of senders.
At this point, this theory seems obvious based on the simple messages:
“Fight Resistance Pursue Enlightenment” and “Fight Enlightenment Pursue Resistance”

When I first picked up my scanner, everyone I spoke to said that the glyphs came from the Shapers. I believed this. Until I didn’t. I did not understand why the Shapers would send messages that were counter to what they wanted us to do. I read that there might be multiple factions within the Shapers that might cause such clashes of messages.

When it became clear that the N’zeer were involved, I wondered if two such ancient societies could use the same memetic language to communicate. It makes sense that they do. This is where the concept of a memetic language comes into its own. Unlike language and word drift, memes would remain consistent for a much longer time. There would not be the problem we have between “Old English” and “English” because the concepts of “civilization” and “nature” and “creation” and “destruction” would remain constant.

That said….

Theory 3: There are some glyphs that one side will not use because it is not part of their culture.
In specific, the Shaper and N’zeer cultures are so different that one side would not be able to use some concepts from the other because they would be too alien. There are a few glyphs I’m thinking of in specific:

Hide, Ignore, Forget, Distance/Outside, and Open.

The Shaper civilization, as I understand it, is a hive mind, a universal conscious there all live as one while the N’zeer civilization is based more on the individual journey. As such, the Shaper society would be unable to Hide, Ignore, or Forget anything. Same with the concept of being Outside or distancing oneself from the whole.

Even the way the glyphs are shaped make me feel cut off. (Same with the glyph Weak but that will be discussed in post 3.) What one knows, the rest know. These are glyphs of the N’zeer.

Open, on the other hand, is a glyph of acceptance and bring others into the self. This feels like a Shaper glyph. One that the N’zeer, who seem to prize individual growth to promote the whole rather subsuming the self within the whole.

I have not examined every glyph because most clearly belong to both civilizations. I’m curious what you think about this concept. Which glyphs do you believe belong only to one side or the other?

Recently I've heard the rumors that a private Hangout conversation in which I tried to help a freshly minted Level 8 Enlightened Player who shall remain nameless became the source of some serious vitriol.

I had met this ENL player in person, as well as had friendly chats on hangouts about growing herbs and vegetables in a garden. I myself like to garden, so I was providing advice on these things when he asked questions. The only mentor this ENL player had was one who prides himself on "being an asshole" (his words, not mine). Needless to say, this freshly minted L8 has been linkamping my desk portals for nearly a month.

Let me sidetrack a moment here. I have 7 desk portals. I don't care. I'm a glypher, I get gear wherever I go. I can pull X8 out of P5, P6, P7 or P8 portals. This tactic is ineffective for anyone who presses the hack button more than instantaneously. There are also farms all over the area. There's ENL vending machines within 10 minutes of my house. I can't even express how in writing how little I don't care about the linkamps. There's not enough linkamps and ADA in Detroit to stop players from getting gear. What I do care about, is people acting responsibly towards eachother in the game. That's what it is, a game.

That being said, when a RES guardian hunter asked if I wanted him put on the "no fly list" to prevent him ever getting a guardian, I said no. I tried to warn him that the linkamping was getting attention of people he didn't want attention from. Having pushed through the guardian after numerous hits and recharging 400 portals as guardian candidates to pull one off, I can assure you, I am well familiar with the frustration that can come from being hunted.

I don't enjoy the guardian game. I think it's the worst experience in this game. It's one of only two ways that someone can truly cause grief to someone else. I have my onyx guardian. I still don't hunt. I remember what it was like trying to get mine. If you comm me and tell me I'm attacking your guardian I won't kill it as a guardian hunt. Ask Xibulba. I'm sorry theirs got killed, I left it alone. I'm also sorry that you commed me because I'm sure someone who does hunt saw it, so maybe hit me up on hangouts instead. My G+ is linked.

I used an analogy with this player about the linkamps that may have not been the wisest of choices, but it was in no way a threat. Those of you that know me know I have no serious bone in my body except when it comes to the well-being and safety of people. This player has been using this analogy as a pity cry to claim that I threatened him and act as a leader in the community. I will post the screenshots of this conversation tomorrow (with the name of the person redacted. I'm not trying to embarass them).

I am doing this because this stream of hatred brewing in Detroit over this "incident" that wasn't has got to stop. This player has refused to show anyone the screenshots of the conversation under the guise of being a standup guy. In reality, he's doing it because he's twisting these words and using them as a tool to rile up people into an angry mob.

If any of you believe I have, or ever would threaten any of you over a game, please step back, uninstall ingress and find some help. I've been nothing but nice to everyone I've met. I've offered coffee, meals, friendship, advice, bursters, resonators, and fielding help to members of both teams. I've helped new ENL players learn how to play the game, and even driven some of them out to UMG to farm. Ask @H0kuma if I was ok with her throwing a large field for badges the first time I met her. Ask @Zaldor if I drove him out to UMG to farm. Ask @therealaddman if I bought him coffee and introduced him to the best sandwich shop in Detroit (Yay Mudgies).

Stop assuming everyone on the other side of the scanner is an evil mastermind looking to get into a physical altercation. This is not the second time I've had to defend myself from these wild accusations.

I congratulate you on your fields, I chastise members of my own team for talking trash in coms and I will drink beer and celeberate a game we all love with any member of any team. If you have a problem with me, talk to me. Stop spreading false rumors. Play the game as a person. I'm not saying you have to be x-fac friendly, but don't run at people's cars, don't threaten people, don't talk shit in comms, and start acting like a human being.

If the players that invited me to join this game told me the drama that would unfold out of playing a game I would've never signed up for this. As it is, I'm watching people of both factions quit this game they enjoy over this nonsense. It's a game. Say it with me. It's a game.
