Historic Tree Damaged In Storm

The stately Magnolia suffered damage, but will live as it continues to stand watch over the lake. A historic tree along the DeFuniak Springs Circle Drive and Lakeyard lost branches during the recent storm. The magnolia tree, with its low sweeping branches suffered damage as a large upper branch broke and took out several lower limbs.

The tree is often featured in historic tours and walks around the Lakeyard. The branches hang over the sidewalk, dipping low to create what looks like a natural playground jungle gym. The tree is usually decorated for holidays and has sported a large yellow ribbon when our military are gone.

The tree is a Magnolia Grandflora (c. 1840). The tree has a spreading crowd of 78 feet, is 52 feet high and has a trunk circumference of 13.5 feet. The tree at one time was ranked as one of Florida’s champion trees.

Mrs. Pinckard lives in the historic house, one of many victorian homes around the lake, where the tree grows in the front yard. She says about 25 years ago, there was a lady who regularly walked the circle lake. Mrs. Pinckard says the lady was in her 80’s. This lady told the Pinckards she used to play with her friends in and under the tree. She told them the girls would would write letters on the back of the magnolia leaves. Mrs. Pinckard says it is anybody’s guess guess as far as age. The only way to tell would be to cut the tree, something they would never do.

The EconoLodge in DeFuniak Springs burned Thursday night. DeFuniak Springs Fire Chief Brian Coley says it was a hard fire to work and gives credit to the firefighters. Coley says the fire started on the east end and rooms on both sides of the building were damaged, 16 plus in all. The cause of the fire is unknown and Coley said he did not know of any injuries. The state Fire Marshal was called to investigate. Hotel guests were being relocated. DeFuniak Springs Fire Department, Walton Fire-Rescue and Argyle volunteer Fire Department all responded.
