“Writers need to be on social media!” everyone says. I agree. You don’t have to be a social media expert, or spend 24/7 connected to your Facebook and Twitter apps, but you should have an online presence. A website is a good start, but if you want to…

If you’ve checked the news or been on Facebook at all in the past week (or looked out your window, depending on where you live), you know that the east coast of the US got some snow. More than is usual for most of that area. I love snow, and I always find…

I’ve written several posts before out words that are easily confused with other words, words that are often misspelled, and other spelling slip-ups. So to add to that list, here are three words that I hear a lot in conversation – and often see written, as…

For this week’s post, I’m going to share a poem. A bit unusual, especially if you know me – I’m not a poet, and I don’t pretend to be. I wrote a poem for a writing contest for the Iceland Writers Retreat. I didn’t win the contest, but I wanted to share…

Not a long post this week. I just wanted to share this reminder that in the hustle of the holiday season, take a moment to sit down, reflect and relax, and be thankful. Whether you’ve finished all your decorating or not, whether you’ve reached your daily…

Not much of a post this week, since tomorrow is Thanksgiving here in America. Take time to slow down, enjoy life, enjoy your friends and family, and be thankful.

I’ve seen this topic circulating around the writing community a lot lately: when is it okay to use curse words in your story? And on a related topic: how much current slang is okay? I believe the short answer is: “it depends.” By way of a long answer,…

This week I’m stealing my blog topic from my friend Jessica over at Chronically Vintage. She’s a lovely person and blogs about vintage fashion, which is something I knew little about until I started writing historical fiction. Anyway, the idea of this…

Tis the season for new year’s resolutions. We look back on what we’ve accomplished – and didn’t – in the past year, and resolve to do better and do more in the coming year. While this is a good sentiment, there’s a reason that a lot of traditional New…

I confess that I haven’t done a lot of writing in the past couple of weeks – either on my current novels, or on this blog (hence the short posts for two weeks in a row). I have, however, been taking a little time to get in the Christmas spirit. It’s my…

So what should you give to your writer friend/spouse/family member for Christmas? If you’re a writer, what should you ask for? Here are some ideas:  Pens. Or pencils. Because, you know, writers need tools to write with. Even those who write exclusively by…

I’ve done a post about quotes for writing and inspiration, but I’ve been collecting more writerly quotes, so I thought I’d share. Who doesn’t love a great quote about books, storytelling, and the passion we feel for the written word? Enjoy! “A writer is…

Help around the House has done several jobs for me and my parents: hung a ceiling light, installed a new kitchen sink, fixed my leaky bathtub faucet, installed a deadbolt for the front door. All jobs were done quickly, efficiently, cleaned up afterwards. I'd call them first for any job!
