Love this: "Trust me, we won’t be giving up any civil liberties to keep ourselves safe because of this. We won’t cancel next year’s marathon. We won’t drive to New Hampshire and stockpile weapons. When the authorities find the weak and terminally maladjusted culprit or culprits, we’ll roll our eyes at whatever backward ideology they embrace and move on with our lives."

Like a cicada swarm, the pronunciation debate over the word GIF roared back this week after a long period of incubation when Steve Wilhite, the format’s inventor, declared it should be pronounced “jif,” like the peanut butter.

Introduction
Chuck Taylor, 57, is a Seattle journalist whose media experience spans the Web, printed publications, and radio. He has been a reporter, writer, editor, and designer for four Washington state newspapers and several Web sites.

Today he is an editor at The Daily Herald in Everett, Washington, and an adjunct instructor for Washington State University North Puget Sound.

He was reared in Michigan and Ohio. His first job after Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, was at the Tri-City Herald in nearby Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco, where he worked as a reporter and editor from 1980-85.

Taylor joined The Seattle Times in 1985 as the paper's first newsroom graphic designer. He spent 16 years at The Times, working as a designer, editor, or reporter in four news departments. As a reporter, he covered media, with emphasis on television, and later Boeing and aviation safety.

During the seven-week newspaper strike of 2000-01, Taylor founded and edited the Seattle Union Record, a newspaper and website published by striking staffers of The Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

From 2002-06, he was managing editor of Seattle Weekly, the city's leading alternative paper, overseeing news coverage and the paper's evolving Web site.

Most recently, in 2007-08, Taylor was founding editor and a co-owner of Crosscut, an online local-news outlet in Seattle. (Crosscut has since switched to non-profit status.)

Taylor has a pilot's license and long ago worked as a small-market Top 40 disc jockey.
