Taller grass is healthier grass. It shades out weed seeds, preventing them from sprouting. It keeps the soil cooler, keeping it moist longer and encouraging the proliferation of soil microbes. (You want lots of soil microbes because they convert nutrients from the soil into a form that plants can use.) All this encourages grass to spread into bare spots. And it promotes deeper root penetration, which is the secret to drought resistance.lake Oswego Bethany Beaverton

It's best to plant creeping myrtle in early spring, before its blooming season. It is a hardy plant and tolerates planting through several seasons. It spreads quickly, with roots that develop at the nodes where they touch the soil. Creeping myrtle produces purplish-blue, tube-shaped blossoms that are 1 inch or less in diameter in spring, continuing to bloom through the summer and into early fall. An established plant grows in small mounds, about 6 inches high, providing a groundcover over a bed planted with seasonal bulbs or around the base of a tree.

Testing For Crane Fly, Treating Crane Fly Around Portland, OR
The European Crane Fly is one import we really could do without!
The first thing we usually notice are the adult crane fly seen around Portland in summer flying around your yard and landing on your lawn. They are laying their eggs which will hatch into a grub-like larvae and eventually damage your lawn during late winter and early spring. And if there are enough larvae, they will keep damaging your lawn if not properly treated.
Signs Of Crane Fly
If you see bare patches in your Lake Oswego lawn (or wherever you live) and if you see areas where your grass does not seem to be growing back in spring you may have a crane fly problem. Big areas of brown lawn in the summer are another sign the problem has gotten serious.
At Paradise Ground Maintenance, our lawn care and yard service experts will test for crane fly and we can treat for crane fly if necessary. Or we might find it is another type of lawn care problem we often face in the northwest.
When To Check For Crane Fly
The crane fly larvae, called leatherjackets, really start eating the roots of your lawn in January and that is often when they first become visible for our lawn care experts. But the best times for us to check for crane fly in Portland and Vancouver are February and March because the leatherjackets have eaten more of your lawn’s root system and are bigger and easier to see and count.
When to Treat Crane Flies
At Paradise Ground Maintenance, we like to treating crane fly infestations during March and April. This timing allows us to accurately understand the scope of the problem and stop it before the larvae spend the summer eating your lawn, leaving it with unexpected brown spots for all your guests to see. So catching infestations by the end of April really helps.
When You Cannot Treat Crane Fly
When you see crane fly in the summer or early fall, flying all over the yard, there is nothing you can or need to do at that point. These adults do not eat your lawn and they do not bite. After a few weeks they’ll be gone. Be sure to bookmark this page and contact Paradise Ground Maintenance for crane fly diagnosis and treatment in the Portland area during early spring.
