Prior to the beginning of the Roman Empire in the latter part of the first century BCE, there had existed many empires (the Assyrian, the Babylonian, the Persian, and the Macedonian). All of these empires had great leaders such as Cyrus, Darius, Xerxes, and, of course, Alexander the Great. Yet, according to history these great men were all called kings; the term emperor was never used. In contrast, the Roman Empire was different, for it didn’t have a king; it had an emperor, and one must search both the Roman Republic and the Empire, almost one thousand years of history, to discover the reasons for the difference.
Before Rome was an empire, it was a republic with a long history of “democratic” rule. After ousting the Etruscans and their king, the city-state was ruled by a Senate and/or an assembly with elected magistrates - consuls and tribunes, both with term of office limitations.

All week we’ve been celebrating #‎NAIDOC‬ week with amazing objects from #IndigenousAustraliahttp://ow.ly/P5PQX

Pearl shell is found along the north-west Australian coast but was also traded thousands of miles inland. Pearl shell was prized for its iridescent qualities – its capacity to shine – which spoke to Indigenous aesthetic sensibilities. It was incorporated into decorative forms for personal adornment or ritual http://ow.ly/PqB27

Claude depicted a number of imaginary seaports, including this painting of a port at sunset. Many of his works are concerned with the theme of journeying: http://bit.ly/1exxxgf

The #Danish National Museum announced on Wednesday that archaeologists have uncovered a trove of gold spirals that may have been used for religious ceremonies during the #BronzeAge, when the Danes’ ancestors worshiped the sun. http://buff.ly/1LYGGg8

Today in 1962: Telstar 1, the world's first active communications satellite, was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida atop a Thor-Delta rocket. Two days later, Telstar relays the world's first transatlantic television signal.

In our collection is a backup spacecraft to Telstar 1 and 2, which was transferred from the National Museum of American History in 2006. It is coming to our transformed Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall in 2016. Learn more about the model: http://bit.ly/1xXu0wC

Story

"Quod in vitae spatium agimus in aeternum resonat" (Máximo Décimo Meridio).
